Lot 3118 - 1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, 10c on 9ca dull green, surcharge double (Chan 44f. Scott 35a), Pane 4, position 10, excellent color, unused with large part original gum, Very Fine example of this elusive rarity.

Only one sheet of twenty was produced with the double surcharge, and Tony Kwan has documented and plated all twenty examples (19 unused and one used).

The name Tony Kwan is synonymous with Imperial China’s Dowagers Issue. Kelleher & Rogers is privileged to offer his multiple award-winning collection, which presents some of the finest and most difficult-to-obtain material relating to both the basic issue and its various surcharges—Proofs, unsurcharged Second Printings, Mollendorf’s special printing, a vast array of singles, groups and sets of each printing and surcharge, and a wonderful array of important and striking covers. Among these are the Small Figures 10c on 9ca double surcharge, the “Golden Dragon”, the “Red Ruby”, and the iconic January 1897 use of the Small Figures 4c on 4ca on an incoming cover from France. As much of this material has not been available for 20 years or more, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector to fill out his or her collection.
