Scott 67, 69, 71, 78), with two examples of 2c on 2ca, canceled by Tientsin pakua, on 1897 (25 July) registered envelope to Belgium, matching "Tientsin" origin and brown "Shanghai" transit (30.7, on reverse) dollar daters, in combination with overlapping France "Chine" 50c, canceled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (30.7), showing "R" unframed handstamp in red and handstruck framed "R" in black adjacent, with "Ligne N/Paq. Fr. No. 4" octagonal datestamp (31.7) and "Seraing" arrival c.d.s. (4.9) on reverse, address scratched out, Fine to Very Fine, and the earliest recorded use of the 1.5mm. surcharge on cover.

Expertization
Experts and Consultants certificate (2008), which states that the 10c on 12ca is the "Empress Dowager Second Printing Surch. with large figures, wide spacing, 10c. on 12Cds. pale orange yellow".

Scott 66, 68), the 1c on 1ca with interpane margin and 4c on 4ca misperforated horizontally, canceled by "Foochow" dollar dater in brown on 1897 (9 Sept.) envelope to Howe, Nebraska (7.10) via Yokohama (18.9) and Tacoma (3.10), "Shanghai" transit dollar dater (12.9, error "3EP") in blue on reverse, in combination with Japan Koban 5s, canceled by "Shanghai/I.J.P.O." c.d.s. (14.9), the 1c on 1ca has small corner defect, Fine to Very Fine, and one of three recorded covers with the 1.5mm. third printing 4c on 4ca.

The preferential 5 cents rate to the United States through the Japanese Post Office, which was discontinued on 1 October and raised to 10 cents in order to be standardized with the overseas rate of the other foreign post offices.

"Christian and Missionary Alliance, Wuhu, China" corner card envelope to Hamilton, Ontario (11.11) via San Francisco, "Shanghai" transit dollar dater (10,10, on reverse) in blue, in combination with Japan Koban 5s, canceled by "Shanghai/I.J.P.O." c.d.s. (12.10), showing "ctms/T" handstamp in violet, handstruck "5" and blue crayon "12½" adjacent, the Dowager surcharged stamp has large margin trimmed at foot, cover reduced at left, Fine to Very Fine.

Since the 5 cents preferential rate through the Japanese Post Office was eliminated on 1 October 1897 and the rate raised to 10 cents to conform to the U.P.U. rate, the 5 cents underpayment of postage was taxed.
