3019 cover image1894, Empress Dowager 60th Birthday, 1st printing, 1ca reddish orange and 2ca green (Chan 22, 23. Scott 16, 17), canceled by Tientsin seal in blue on 1896 (19 Nov.) envelope (printed seal of the "Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes" on the flap) from Shanghai to Peking "Per first steamer", showing "Paid" framed handstamp in red, "Shanghai/Local Post" origin c.d.s. on reverse, sent by the sea route to Taku, where it was transferred to the Customs Post at Tientsin (24.11) and the Dowager stamps applied to pay the fee for domestic postage on non-Customs mail, with "Customs/Tientsin" double-ring datestamp and "I.G. of Customs/Peking" double-ring arrival datestamp (25.11), both in blue on reverse, opened out for display and a little reduced at foot on back, Very Fine.

To date, there are five or less combination usages known with the Shanghai Local Post "Paid" handstamp and Dowagers paying the postage for both postal systems, of which we record three such covers. The last three envelopes were addressed to the French Legation in Peking, and each has the printed seal of the Messageries Maritimes, so these possibly were carried on a ship operated by this shipping company.
