Large Figures Surcharges 2.5mm Setting on Dowager First Printing

Scott 34, var.), complete sheet of forty, Setting C, Panes 9 and 10, with sheet margin at left and interpane margin at right, variety lower row of stamps with watermark omitted, solid color, unused with large part original gum, which is browned as usual, left Pane, positions 19-20 have short diagonal crease, Fine to Very Fine intact sheet, and a notably rare variety.

To date, only two complete sheets with this spectacular watermark variety have been recorded. The other sheet is from Panes 11 and 12, and, in actual fact, these two sheets are adjoining panes. The other sheet (Spink, 22.11.1998, lot 834, and Universe, 11.4.2015, lot 2153) has the first two vertical row of stamps split and rejoined. (Image1)

Scott 34), canceled by pakua in brown on 1897 (22 Sept.) envelope from Tientsin to Sundsvall, Sweden (12.11), matching "Tientsin" origin and blue "Shanghai" transit (inverted "S" in "Sep", on reverse) dollar daters, in combination with France "Chine" 25c, canceled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (1.10), Very Fine and scarce single franking to an uncommon destination, paying the 10 cents rate for mail overseas to U.P.U. countries.

3118 og image1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, 10c on 9ca dull green, surcharge double (Chan 44f. Scott 35a), Pane 4, position 10, excellent color, unused with large part original gum, Very Fine example of this elusive rarity.

Only one sheet of twenty was produced with the double surcharge, and Tony Kwan has documented and plated all twenty examples (19 unused and one used).

Scott 37a), deep bright color, well centered for this, canceled by "Customs/Swatow." double-ring datestamp of "May 12 97", 15mm. sealed tear between stamps at left just extending into lower stamp, Very Fine appearance for one of the great Dowager surcharge varieties.

According to our records, there are less than five examples of this variety recorded. We know of two pairs unused (one is ex Stoloff, the Beckemans, and Huang Ming-Fuang) and two used. The other used pair (Lam Man Yin) is also canceled by the Swatow Customs dater (7.5.97) and has tear between the stamps, but it is well aged and the top stamp also repaired. (Image1) (Image2)

Scott 38b), Pane 3, block of four [5-6/10-12], bright color, well centered with large margin at foot, canceled by "Customs/Shanghai" of "Mar 24 1897" in brown, Very Fine and highly desirable.

One of two recorded blocks of four.

Only one sheet of forty was produced with this variety, and Tony Kwan has accounted for 35 surviving examples, all of which are canceled to order by the "Customs/Shanghai" dater of "Mar 24 1897".
