3079 og image1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, ½c on 3ca orange yellow, surcharge double (Chan 37k. Scott 28d), Setting B, Pane 2, position 11, strong color, centered to lower right as is characteristic of such examples with this variety, unused with large part original gum, light even gum toning not mentioned on accompanying certificate, Fine to Very Fine example of this rare variety.

There were two panes of twenty which received the surcharge double. Examples of the double surcharge variety from Pane 1 show the doubling with horizontal misplacement to the right, while those from Pane 2 show the doubling vertically misplaced.

According to Tony Kwan, there are 32 examples of this variety recorded.

Scott 29, 30, 32, 33), horizontal pair of 8c on 6ca, canceled by Tientsin seals in blue and two stamps additionally tied by "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring transit datestamp (18.2) in brown, on reverse of 1897 (3 Feb.) registered envelope from Tientsin to Tuticorin, India (19.3), redirected to Sialkot (25.3), in combination with Hong Kong 10c pair applied on front and canceled by "Shanghai/C" c.d.s. (19.2), showing "Customs/Tientsin" double-ring datestamp in blue and "Tientsin/R/No. 421" oval type 3 handstamp in red adjacent, also with "R" in circle of the British Post Office, opened out for display, Very Fine and rare use on the second day of the Imperial Post.

The 10 cents rate for mail to U.P.U. countries, with 10 cents registration fee and 4 cents for the Winter Overland Service.

The earliest recorded date of registered mail of the Chinese Imperial Post for any post office.

According to the postal regulations, the Customs daters were to be used to cancel stamps, due to the delay in delivery of the dollar daters. The Post Office in Tientsin continued to use the Customs seals for a short period, during which only a few examples of mail matter are known so canceled.

3090 O image1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, 2c on 2ca green, surcharge double (Chan 39c. Scott 30c), Setting B, bright color, particularly well centered within large margins, centrally canceled by pakua and part c.d.s., small tear at top, otherwise Very Fine.

Of the two sheets (80 stamps) produced with this error, there are less than 35 documented examples. The vast majority are unused and come from what is referred to as the type A surcharge from Setting A. There are approximately five or six examples of the type B surcharge double variety from Setting B, which has the surcharge applied higher than that of type A. All of these are canceled by pakua.

3091 O image1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, 2c on 2ca green, surcharge inverted (Chan 39d. Scott 30d), good color, canceled by "Shanghai" dollar dater (15.10,97), two pulled perforations at left and slightly defective corner at lower left with perforations improved at foot, Fine to Very Fine appearance for this rare variety which is often encountered in damaged condition.

Of the one sheet (40 stamps) produced with this error, there are less than 25 documented examples which have survived. To date, practically all known examples are canceled by "Shanghai" dollar daters between 20 Sept. and 8 Nov. 1897. There a number of defective examples, which resulted from the postmaster at Hankow having torn stamps with this error from commercial mail.
