Office of the U.S. Attorney for Oregon" penalty envelope to Peking via Tacoma (17.3), bearing U.S. 10¢ green Webster, canceled by "Portland, Ore" duplex, showing "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai/Recd." c.d.s. (18.4) and "Customs/Tientsin" double-ring datestamp (23.4) in red denoting domestic postage due for mail to northern China, and later redirected to Bangkok (19.10) after a considerable delay, with Dowager 6ca brown, canceled by Tientsin seal in blue paying the domestic postage, and also tied by British Post Office "Shanghai/C" thimble type datestamp (23.9), with "Customs/Tientsin" (16.9) and "Customs/Shanghai" (19.9) double-ring datestamps in blue adjacent, Very Fine and exceedingly rare usage, being the only incoming cover from the U.S.A. franked with the Dowager issue. Of the highest exhibition caliber.

Scott 22), canceled by Tientsin seal in blue on reverse of 1896 (3 Feb.) envelope to Hamburg (20.3), matching "Customs/Tientsin" origin and blue "Customs/Shanghai" transit (14.2) double-ring datestamp for carriage by the Winter Overland Service, in combination with Germany Eagle 10pf (2) and 20pf applied on front and canceled by "Shanghai" c.d.s. (14.2), two of the German stamps have faults with some heavy gum staining around perforations, otherwise Fine and an enigmatic franking as far as the rate.

According to the accompanying Holcombe certificate, "It is unclear whether the sender prepaid the triple internal postage of 9 cand. and underfranked the German postage or whether the 9 cand. prepaid the entire single rate and it was found to be underpaid and the German P.O. added a further 20Pf. postage".

(27.11), the Dowager 9ca stamps have aged perforations. and one stamp also has trimmed margin at right, the cover reduced at sides and foot, Fine.

Scott 23), a splendid complete sheet of twenty-five, Pane 3, with sheet margin at left showing guide line cross and interpane margin at top, position 2 is the retouched corner and position 13 stop after "China", deep bright color, fresh from the front, unused with practically full original gum, slight brownish gum buildups and age spots, hinge remnants in margin, Fine to Very Fine.

Among the rarest of the Dowager Empress complete sheets.
