1641 c ImageHopkinson's Express Paid. Nevada, Red Dog, You Bet & Dutch Flat. Three-line printed frank with towns listed (Thomas HOP-011) on paste-up 3c Pink on White entire (U58) to San Francisco, conjunctive use with "Wells, Fargo & Co. Dutch Flat Jan, 6" blue oval datestamp, significant staining, otherwise Fine and extremely rare, this is the only recorded example of this frank, E. B. Hopkinson purchased a route that ran from Nevada City into the Dutch Flat area, in late 1864 he sold the route to J.A. Stone but it was turned back over to Hopkinson in Feb. 1865, all the known uses of the printed franks date from 1865-67 (Thomas, pp. 422-425), there are two versions of the frank that list the towns, this one, which is unique, and a different style of which two are known (see Siegel Sale 896, lot 656 for one) (Image)

1643 c ImageHunter & Co's Express Placerville. Clear strike of double-line oval handstamp (Thomas HUN-106), bold "Paid" handstamp in same style on Oct. 20, 1852 folded letter to San Francisco

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS HUNTER & CO.'S EXPRESS HANDSTAMP. ONLY THREE ARE RECORDED.

Alexander Hunter started his semi-weekly express in May 1851 and ran from Placerville to all parts of Colorado and Placer counties including Coloma, Weaverville, Mud Springs and Diamondville. He connected at first with Gregory's Express and then with Adams & Co. for San Francisco, the Atlantic states and Europe. His main office was at Placerville and in 1852 was moved to Mud Springs. Hunter sold his business to Wells, Fargo & Co. in July 1854 and became their Placerville agent. The Thomas book records only three examples of this style Hunter handstamp.
