Blue serrated frame printed frank and address (without "Paid", Thomas KEN-001) on 3c Pink on White entire (U58) to San Francisco, entered the mails with "San Francisco Cal. Mar. 3" circular datestamp and rosette cancel, manuscript "K" at bottom left, Very Fine and scarce, this small express operated by M.G. Kennedy and F.M. Utter carried mail along the coast from Half Moon Bay and Pescadero to San Francisco, two frank types are known -- the other with "Paid" vertically at right of the frank, only approximately ten examples are recorded combining both types, illustrated in Letters of Gold, ex Edwards (Image)

Blue serrated frame printed frank and address (Thomas KEL-001) on 3c albino entire (U58 var) to San Jose, entered the mails with "San Francisco Cal. Mar. 25" circular datestamp, Very Fine, an outstanding cover, in 1864 Kennedy and Utter took on an additional partner named Long, the express continued to operate over the same route, between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay, it ceased operations in 1866 (Thomas p. 463), only five used entires are recorded and this is the only one with an albino embossed stamp (Image)

1655 c ImageLeland & McCombe's Express, San Francisco. Clear strike of double-line oval handstamp in black (Thomas LEL-100) on cover to Trinidad (on the coast near Oregon border), some slight wear incl. expert repair at top, Very Fine strike and a rare express use, in 1853 George Leland and John McCombe started their express business, carrying mail by water between San Francisco and Crescent City, Port Orford and other towns in Humboldt Bay, their partnership was dissolved in June 1854 and Leland formed a new partnership with David McComb (without the "e", see lot 1656), serving the same area and expanding in August 1854 with a South Coast express to Monterey, Santa Barbara, San Pedro, Los Angeles and San Diego, this frank is very rare with only three examples recorded in Thomas, ex Goldberg (Image)
