Remarkable eight-line handstamp listing offices, addresses and agents for San Francisco (280 Montgomery), Sacramento and New York (Thomas GRE-126a), mostly clear strike on greenish folded letter from New York City to San Francisco, red "Not Paid" in oval handstamp, sender's ship designation "Cherokee Nov. 13/50" crossed out with "Empire City" written above, docketing indicates Dec. 29 receipt, Very Fine, Joseph Gregory started his express in April 1850 and expanded rapidly, the 280 Montgomery address was first advertised in October 1850, this handstamp appears shortly after and was used for a brief period, it is one of the rarest of the many Gregory handstamps, with only four recorded in Thomas (Image)

Nevada Jul. 5" blue oval datestamp, from the Zellerbach correspondence with usual reduction at right, otherwise Very Fine, Harrier served all of the mining camps in the vicinity of Nevada City, where Wells, Fargo & Co. provided the connection to other areas, the franks are rare (approximately five of this style are recorded) -- as a side note, the frame of this frank is made of the same ornaments used to print the 1852 Hawaiian Missionary stamps -- ex Dale-Lichtenstein (Image)

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF W. F. HERRE'S CONTRA-COSTA EXPRESS.

W. F. Herre ran the first express in Contra-Costa to San Francisco in 1855-56. He sold out to Hoag & Co., which removed Herre's name from the handstamp and replaced it with "J.W. Hoag & Co."

Printed frank in banner (Thomas HOM-001) on 3c Pink on Buff entire (U35) to San Francisco, bold strike of "Holland, Morley & Co's Express, La Porte, Cal." double-line oval handstamp, conjunctive use with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Marysville Mar. 8" (1862) oval datestamp, repaired at right into embossed stamp, couple other minor edge faults

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS EXTREMELY RARE FRANK AND USE DATES TO THE ORIGINAL HOLLAND & MORLEY PARTNERSHIP. ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED.

This use dates from the original Holland, Morley & Co.'s Express partnership, which was started in 1862 after the purchase of R. Francis' Express and Everts, Wilson & Co. Express. Holland & Morley provided service between Marysville and the Gibsonville Ridge and Feather River mining camps, connecting with Whiting & Co. as well as Wells, Fargo & Co. Late in 1862 Morley sold out to Sam Wheeler and a string of different franks and handstamps followed. A nearly identical cover was in the 1997 Dale-Lichtenstein sale, but very few others exist (the Thomas book records only five).
