Blue framed handstamped frank (Thomas BUK-100) on 3c Green entire (U82), usual conjunctive use with black printed Wells, Fargo & Co. frank to San Francisco, minor opening fault at top left and missing part of backflap, otherwise Very Fine, scarce frank from this small express that ran between Bakersfield and Kernsville Cal. (connecting with Wells Fargo), only approximately ten are recorded, nearly all from the William Willis correspondence, another example in the same hand as the cover offered here originated in Darwin Cal. VERY FINE APPEARANCE. BY FAR THE FINER OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE FRANK AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.

Chester P. Fox's Half-Moon & San Francisco Express operated in 1862 between San Francisco and the Half-Moon Bay area in San Mateo county. The only other recorded example is in the Wiltsee collection at the Wells, Fargo & Co. museum. The Wiltsee cover shows significant staining at left and reduction to the edge of the frank. Neither cover has any indication of U.S. postage.

1598 c ImageEureka, Rohnerville & Hydesville Express. Bullard & Sweasey, Proprietors. Large handstamped frank with illustration of 4-horse stagecoach on back of 3c Green entire (U82) to San Francisco, "Eureka Cal. Sep. 1" (ca. 1870) circular datestamp, Very Fine, research by William W. Sammis identifies Bullard and Sweasey as blacksmiths and Sweasey separately as a livery stable operator in Hydesville in 1878, they probably ran the express for a brief period in 1870, this is the only recorded example of the frank seen by Sammis or recorded by Lyons, unlisted in Thomas (Image)
