Blue double-line oval handstamp (Thomas BRW-100c) on brown cover from San Francisco to Murphy Camp (letter no longer accompanies), conjunctive use with partly clear strike of blue "Adams & Co. Express San Francisco" oval, also manuscript "pr. Adams & Co. Express", which carried the cover to Stockton where it was turned over to Brown's Express, patched tears at top and slightly reduced at right, otherwise Fine, William A. Brown started an express between Stockton and the Southern Mines in 1850, he was shot and killed in 1853 by an assailant who committed suicide after being apprehended, the express continued under his name until Feb. 1855 when Adams & Co. collapsed, this large oval is much rarer than the smaller "Forwarded by" Brown's ovals, fewer than ten are recorded in Thomas (Image)
