1682 ogbl 4a Image#4a, 1866 2pi Yellow, imperforate, another example in a block of four, margins full to just touching at bottom left, light marking on bottom left stamp, full o.g., very fine; an excellent accompaniment to the previous lot with only five believed to exist (Nile Post #D5x; $3,000.00 for perforated). 1683 c 4d Image#4d, 1866 2pi Yellow, bisected diagonally as 1pi tied to folded cover by black "Poste Vice-Reali Egiziane/Alessandria/21 LUG 67 IT" (Smith Ty. I-2.5) datestamp with an additional strike to the right to Suez, arrival datestamp of Suez on reverse dated the same day, cover stained with vertical file fold well away from adhesive; a mere five are believed to exist (Nile Post #D5cc; $3,000.00).

Supplies of the 1866 1pi became critically low in July 1867 which triggered the Director General, Muzzi Bey, to issue a Postal Administration circular to Alexandria, and quickly thereafter, to Cairo allowing the bisection of the 2pi diagonally for use as 1pi until the 2nd Issue came into effect. This means Alexandria has dates between July 16-31 and Cairo July 20-31. The Alexandria bisect on cover is far more scarce than the Cairo bisect. (Image)

1688 c 7 Image#7, 1866 1pi Rose lilac, single tied to folded letter by "Poste Vice-Reali Egiziane/Cairo/22 GIUG 66" (Smith Type I) with an additional strike to the right addressed to Alexandria, arrival "Poste Vice-Reali Egiziane/Alessandria/22 GIUG 66" (Smith Type I-2) in red on reverse struck over the fold of paper, cover and stamp with quite a bit of toning, some creases present on cover, owners handstamp at bottom right on front.

While not the most attractive cover, red Smith Type I datestamps are the most difficult to find, especially a strike this full, legible and complete. According to his book, Smith has only seen one legible red cancel dating eight days after this strike. It is not believed there was a special significance attached to red but evidently the strike was in place for only a very short period of time. (Image)

1692 p 9b var. Image#9b var., 1867 10pa Lilac, bisected diagonally to use as 5pa well tied by "V.R. Poste Egiziane/Alessandria/30 DIC 1871 TIII" (Smith Ty. III-2.5) with an additional strike just below on a book cover rather than the usual La Trombetta newspaper to Cairo, the 1869 book, printed in Athens, is called "Quelques Remarques/sur/Les Fonctions de Grece et de Rome/dans la Propagation et la Preparation/du/Christianisme," insignificant tone spots around stamp and cover, minor nicks along border, some archival tape sensibly used on reverse to strengthen folds, fine; a magnificent usage of the bisected 10pa of which we are unable to find a similar example (Nile Post #D9g var.).

Towards the end of the Second Issue, Egypt was facing a severe shortage of the 5pa stamp and therefore it was officially authorized on November 17, 1871 to allow the diagonal bisection of the 10pa to help quell the shortage. The Third Issue was placed on sale January 1st, 1872 and the latest known usage of the bisect is January 20 making the time frame of use a mere two months. The 5pa paid the newspaper rate and examples are typically seen on "La Trombetta" newspaper wholes or fragments. (Image)
