1703 p 22bg Image#22bg, 1874-75 1pi Vermilion, vertical tete-beche pair, used on piece with "Poste Vice Reali Egiziane/Alessandria/16 SE 80" (Smith Ty. I), date on stamp is vertically configured rather than horizontally across cancel, moreover 1880 is an extraordinarily late usage as the Ty. I cancels began to fade away in the early 1870's, extremely fine (Nile Post #D26a; $125.00+). (Image) $125.00+

1704 c 23b Image#23b, 1874-75 2pi Yellow, perforated 12½ rough, single on cover tied by "Postes Egyptiennes/Alexandrie/2 JAN 79" (Smith Ty. VI-2) datestamp with an additional strike to Cairo, registered "Raccomandato" (Smith Ty. Reg-6) in oval marking, Cairo arrival datestamp on reverse, interesting array of five wax seals on reverse as well, cover and stamp with some toning and slightly rough opening at left not effecting stamp, fine.

The Smith Type VI cancellation saw the changeover from Italian to French as the language used at the Post Office. This coincided with Caillard Pasha becoming Postmaster General. Only four cities received this datestamp - Alexandria, Helouan, Roda and Suez. Examples are, for some reason, very scarce to find. (Image)

1711 O   Image"Dopo la Partenza" handstamps on a grouping of 3rd (1872-75) and 4th (1879-1902) issues, each are either Smith Ty. TL-1 or TL-2 handstamps, one Ty. TL-1 overprint is red, all very fine or better strikes; this handstamp was applied to both the stamps and covers on mail as an informational marking highlighting that the mail was received too late to be included in that day's mail. 1714 c 31 Image#31, 1879-1902 10pa Lilac rose, tied to small cover by a black retta cancellation to Cairo, very fine; both the retta cancel and single usage of the 10pa Lilac rose are very scarce on cover.

Retta cancellations were originally designed as devices to obliterate stamps while the datestamp was applied separately. By 1866, retta cancels were used solely for stamps which weren't obliterated by a datestamp for reasons such as being overlooked at the originating post office. (Image)
