1932 (Jan) large envelope (258x118mm; front only) posted directly onto ship, to London endorsed "Per SS Le Maire and per airmail from
Java" with Lakatois '9d/NINE PENCE' on 2/6d and Netherlands Indies Airmails 75c x6 all tied by four light but legible strikes of 'KONINKLIJKE PAKETVAART/S.S. LE MAIRE/MAATSCHAPPIJ' undated handstamp in violet, 'TANDJONG/13.1.32/PRIOK' transit cds
alongside, minor edge bends.
The item apparently weighed up to 3oz, the Papua franking paying foreign letter rate 3d x3, and the Netherlands Indies stamps paying the KLM Airlines airmail surcharge. The KLM Amsterdam-Batavia fortnightly service commenced on 25.9.1930, and
provided a substantially faster delivery than sending the item by ship via Australia to India and by the Imperial Airways Karachi-London service. Unlike US domestic airmail - see Lot 1443 - the Dutch service was seen as a direct competitor to British
interests and not sanctioned. Perhaps the only way to access it was to post items directly onto passing Dutch ships!

1933 (June 6) from Australia to "Government Stores/Port Moresby/Papua" with KGV 2d red, re-directed to "Lae via Salamaua New Guinea"
and endorsed "Air to Lae" with Papua 'AIR [plane] MAIL' Overprint 3d added & tied by 'PORT MORESBY/15JE33/PAPUA' cds with another strike below, minor blemishes. The initial franking paid the 2d surface letter rate to Papua; the added franking paid
the airmail surcharge for carriage by Guinea Airways Goldfields airmail service to Lae. An interesting & unusual 'combination' franking.

1934 (Feb 24) from passenger on board "SS Lurline/Matson Line" (return address) to Wisconsin endorsed "Via Air Mail" with rare
commercial combination franking of Pictorials 3d Dandy and USA Winged Globe 8c olive both tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, the USA stamp also cancelled in transit by 'SAN FRANCISCO/APR 6/CALIF/1934' duplex, light vertical fold clear of the adhesives
otherwise very fine. Roger Lee states that this is the only known non-philatelic example of such a combination franking from Papua. [American dealer GH Pflum created a handful of philatelic covers from both Papua and New Guinea]
In 1924 a system for pre-paying US domestic airmail with either or both Australian or American stamps was introduced in Australia and its Territories at the rates of 4½d (8c), 9d (16c) and 1/1d (24c) per 1oz depending on distance from San Francisco.
The facility was withdrawn in 1937.

East Indies, Singapore & Hong Kong, making calls at Port Moresby and Samarai.

1938 (April) ship-board cover with Pictorials 1d x4 & 4d tied by 'PAQUEBOT/26AP38/SYDNEY' cds (Hosking #1506), very fine. The rate
paid was 2d domestic 1oz letter + 3d per ½oz airmail surcharge x2, but being off-loaded at Sydney the airmail service was redundant. The over-payment easily covered the 1d late fee that was required for posting directly onto the ship.

1938 (May 31) usage of Netherlands KPM South-Pacific Line 'MV Maetsuycker' real photo postcard with lengthy personal message written
on board the ship headed at "Port Moresby", airmail to Germany with Pictorials 2d Bird of Paradise (minor perf fault) & 9d Fisherman tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, Brisbane '-5JE38' transit cds on face, docketed received but undeliverable "15/7 retour"
and "BY AIRMAIL" endorsement crossed out for return by surface mail, two small closed edge tears do not unduly detract. The airmail postcard rate to European countries was set a half that of a ½oz letter: in this case, the ½oz letter rate to Germany
was 1/9d, so the postcard rate was 11d (rounded up to the nearest whole penny). Pre-WWII airmail postcard usages are scarce.

1939 (May 11) Amalgamated Wireless 'RADIOGRAM' envelope & telegram form to "Glt Romney Gill, Samarai, Papua" with fine or very fine
strikes of 'RADIO STATION/11MAY1939/* SAMARAI, PAPUA *' triple-oval datestamp in violet, the message from Liverpool (UK) - the 'From' office "VIC", so presumably re-transmitted from Melbourne - from his brother Evan to "you, Father John, all Duvira",
minor blemishes. Rev SRM Gill headed up the Duvira Mission at the mouth of the Mamba River at Manau, almost 500kms north-west of Samarai, and the item was presumably delivered via ship. The novelty is captured by Rev Gill's pencil annotation on the
reverse "The Radiogram as it arrived here resplendent in official glory" (!). (2 items)
