1939 EAMS cover to "Guernsey/Channel Islands" with Pictorials 1d & 2d pair tied by 'IOMA P.O./1SP39/PAPUA' cds, censored locally with
'OPENED BY CENSOR' rouletted resealing label tied by superb 'PASSED BY CENSOR/["TPB 16/9/39"] Asst. Censor' handstamp in violet (Little Type PMH8-2) on the reverse, 'TOWNSVILLE/17SE39/QLD-AUST' transit backstamp, manuscript "TAX 2/2d" in blue &
British "2s/2d TO PAY/IS/G" in black, GB Postage Dues 2d & 1/- x2 tied by 'GUERNSEY (ST PETER PORT)/3OC/39' cds, minor blemishes & small part of the flap missing. Little illustrates the reverse of this item ("source unknown") at p98 and states that
"This is the second cover I have seen with the label tied with a hand stamp and the only censor mark...with a m/s date by the censor".
Correctly paid and incorrectly taxed: the Empire Air Mail Scheme rate of 5d per ½oz applied, and was not replaced by the 1/6d per ½oz rate until after the outbreak of WWII on 3.9.1939 (two days after this item was posted). By the time the item made
it to Port Moresby (over the other side of the Owen Stanley Ranges), WWII had been declared and EAMS abandoned. Apparently, the Papuan & Australian postal authorities honoured the rate and forwarded the item by airmail. Undoubtedly the most
significant EAMS item from Papua and possibly from the entire Commonwealth.
