1914 (July 8) to "Mrs AT Gill/The Rectory/South Heighton/Nr Lewes/Sussex" with Monocolours ½d green pair tied by 'SAMARAI' cds,
endorsed "Not known/as addressed" at upper left & returned with 'LEWES/30 AU/14' cds, largely very fine strikes of 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/18NO14/BRISBANE' in red & the rare 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/15JAN15/ PAPUA' cds (ERD) in violet on reverse, light
vertical folds affecting one stamp, minor repair & aging marks on reverse. Ex Roger Lee.
The addressee was the wife of Rev SRM Gill of the Duvira Mission at the mouth of the Mamba River at Manau; the envelope is docketed to have contained "1st letter/June 1st 1914", which suggests this item originated at Duvira and took more than a month
to reach Samarai where it entered the mails. Roger Lee states that Bagnall illustrated a 1912 usage. A 1912 strike in black on cover - presumably the Bagnall item - sold at our auction of 15.8.2014 for $1265.

1929 (March 18) large parcel piece (183x210mm) with complete 'Territory of Papua/COMMONWEALTH BRITISH AND FOREIGN/PARCEL [Crown]
POST/FORM OF CUSTOMS DECLARATION' black/pink 'G.P.4/FORM 9' affixed at base, to England with Bicolours 4d & 1/- pair (one with corner fault) tied by 'SAMARAI E.D' cds, the form with a few very minor faults, the piece with a few mostly minor creases
also affecting the stamps.
The parcel rates to the United Kingdom were 1/4d for the first 1lb and 6d per additional 1lb, this item weighing up to 3lbs. Roger Lee states (p67) that "Customs parcel labels of 19241930 and 1933 printings have been seen and they are all similar but
not identical". Roger Lee's later 1931 form (simplified heading; no Crown) - without stamps or address - sold at our auction of 9.11.2002 for $314.

1929 (May 15) to England with Lakatois 1½d violet & brown pair tied by 'KOKODA N.D' cds, damaged in transit with eight (four pairs)
perforated 'FOUND OPEN/OFFICIALLY SEALED' labels each with 'PORT MORESBY/25MAY29' cds affixed all around, some edge faults as to be expected but still fine and very attractive.
Illustrated by Roger Lee at p67 and described on p63. Drummond 'Official Seals of the World' lists these as OS2 with an earliest known date of 15.3.1939, this item now being the earliest recorded by ten years. Drummond speculates that these were
issued in sheets of 4, but all four pairs on this cover are imperforate at top, bottom & right with the left edge perforated, indicating they were issued as pairs in a 'booklet' and removed as needed.
