slightly untidy 9-Bars 'B.N.G' cancel & largely very fine 'SAMARAI/B.N.G' cds (Lee #28) alongside. The Methodist Missionary Rev William E Bromilow and his wife established a mission on the small island of Dobu, some 100kms north of Samarai. [The

superb 'PRINZ WALDEMAR' ship's handstamp in blue, to Germany uprated with BNG ½d tied by 'SAMARAI/B.N.G' cds (Lee #28), light 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU-/GUINEA/ZWEIGLINIE/ 10/4/05' transit on the face, minor blemishes. A quite extraordinary usage.

1906 (April) two British Snap-Shots humorous postcards from Percy John Money to his daughter in NSW, each with BNG 1d, the earlier
headed "Buna Bay" tied by 9-Bars 'B.N.G.' cancel of Samarai with message including "am going ... on an expedition to Mt Albert Edward with Mr Monckton", the later headed "Ioma" tied by a good strike of the rare 'TAMATA/B.N.G' cds (Lee #48A; rated E)
with message including "We will be leaving here in a few days now to skip up that hill (1300-1400 feet)", each with very fine to superb strikes of 'SAMARAI/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' unframed cds (Lee #29) on face, minor aging/toning. Percy Money worked as
a gymnastics instructor with the Anglican Mission education program, and was also involved in official exploration of uncharted parts of the Territory. Roger Lee states that postal facilities were transferred from the Tamata mining village to Ioma in
mid-1905, the datestamp continuiing in use at the new office.

New Guinea was formally incorporated as an external territory of Australia under the name 'Papua' on 1.9.1906.

1907 (Aug 19) large-part newspaper wrapper to England endorsed "Per Makambo via Cairns" with Small 'Papua' Overprints ½d black & green
x2 and 1d black & red tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, minor blemishes. The SS 'Makambo' was acquired by Burns Philp in 1907 and worked their island routes - mainly to the New Hebrides - until 1935. For newspapers published in British New Guinea, the rate
was 1d for the first 4oz plus ½d per additional 2oz. The Small 'Papua' Overprints were prepared at Brisbane and issued in May-June 1907; this is a very early use.

1908 Rev AK Chignell envelope with superb strike of 'WANIGERA.' straight-line handstamp in blue on reverse & endorsed "Aug 24/08" in
red, to a relative in England with Small 'Papua' Overprints 2d black & violet tied in transit by a light 'SAMARAI E.D./30AUG08' cds with a very fine strike alongside, 'HULL/OC 12/08' arrival backstamp, minor blemishes. Wanigela or Wanigera was the
location of an Anglican Mission station on Collingwood Bay between Cape Nelson & Baniara: see Lee at p97. [See also Lot 1408]

1908 (Oct 8) commercial cover to "Herbert Rumsey/Seed Merchants/Dundas/NSW" with Small 'Papua' Overprints 2d black & violet tied by a
light 10-Bars 'B.N.G.' cancel (Lee #60?) with fine 'BONAGAI S.E.D/-8OCT08' cds (Lee #73; rated E) 'relief' usage at Kulumadau (2) alongside, 'DUNDAS/OC24/08/NSW' arrival backstamp, back flap missing. Lee does not record any use of a 'B.N.G.'
canceller in conjunction with a Bonagai cds; this may be a worn strike of #60, but looks more similar to that used at Sudest Island (Lee #55) which closed in 1903. Kulumadau (Woodlark Island) Receiving Office -.7.1896; PO 19.12.1899; replaced by
Bonagai -.6.1905; replaced by Kulumadau (2) late-1907. [Gold Mining]

1908 (Nov 25) small parcel piece (117x82mm) registered to Sydney with Litho 1/- black & orange tied by 'SAMARAI' cds and largely very
fine strike of 'REGISTERED/SAMARAI.B.N.G' handstamp alongside, minor bends one slightly affecting the stamp. Parcel Post rates were 8d for the first 1lb plus 6d per additional 1lb, but registration was not available. The package was probably sent as
Merchandise at 1d per 2oz x9 + 3d registration.

1909 (Oct 8) to "Rev AR Chigwell/Wanigela/via Cape Nelson/NE Division" with Litho 1d black & red and 4d black & brown unusually tied
by superb 'REGISTERED' straight-line handstamp, 'SAMARAI E.D' cds and red/white R label (thick ornate 'R'; number also in red) alongside, very minor blemishes. Roger Lee states that this is the earliest known use of a registration label in Papua, and
that only two examples are known.

1910 (Aug 14) Queensland National Bank Limited envelope to Port Moresby with Queensland Void Background 3d brown solo tied on arrival
by light 'PORT MORESBY' cds, a couple of minor blemishes. Presumably posted directly onto a ship: the letter rate was 2d with an additional 1d paid (although the late fee was 2d). Roger Lee states that no special paquebot or ship letter markings were
used at Port Moresby, and that few such inwards covers are known.

1911 (Nov 2) commercial usage of New Zealand Insurance Co long-format advertising envelope (240x108mm) with Maori illustration and
Townsville (Qld) office imprint at top which has been crossed-out & endorsed "Per S.S. Wakefield", to "Messrs Whitten Bros/Samarai" with Litho 2d black & violet pair (both faulty) tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, light vertical fold & a few minor
blemishes. The internal rate was 2d per 1oz x2. The S.S. 'Wakefield' was owned by the British New Guinea Development Co, but was in service with them for only a year or two.

pair cancelled with very fine straight-line ' * VAN LINSCHOTEN * ' Dutch ship's cachet in violet overstuck by Brisbane machine cancel of 5FEB13, London 'MAR14' machine backstamp, a couple of minor blemishes. The Netherlands KPM Line SS 'van
Linschoten' came into service on the Netherlands East Indies & Australia route in 1910. She was sold to an Indo-Chinese line in 1939, seized by the Japanese in 1942, and sunk near Hong Kong in an American air raid in 1943.

Dutch ship's cachet in violet overstuck with Dutch Indies 'SOERABAJA/4.6.14' cds, small 'T' boxed tax handstamp at lower-right, slightly trimmed at left not affecting stamps or markings; plus a PPC of the ship. The Netherlands KPM Line SS 'Houtman'
came into service in 1913, operating on the Netherlands East Indies & Australia route.
