'G.R.I.' SURCHARGES - Postal History continued...
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
1093 S imagePOSTMARKS: 'BUKA/(DEUTSCH-/NEUGUINEA/16 11/14' cds (Powell #91) superb large-part strike in violet on 'G.R.I./1d.' on 3pf SG 16 (Cat £110). Rated F. The German cds saw limited philatelic use in the early days of the Australian Occupation. This use appears to predate the issue on 16.12.1914 of the 5mm Overprints, but the postal clerk had been unable to change the date slugs. Ex David Hopper. [Erich Schlieper's ('Ello') two lesser strikes on a small GRI piece sold at our auction of 14.3.2009 for $3495]
