1078 # image1915 'G.R.I./ 3d.' on German New Guinea Registration Labels Town Name in Sans-Serif Letters 'Rabaul/(Deutsch-Neuguinea[ ]' with Double Surcharge SG 33da also with Missing Closing Bracket (SG 33de), a few nibbled perfs, unused, Cat £16,000+. The discovery example. Ex 'Besancon' (III). Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) states "Single Setting K...Great rarity with only two other [examples of SG 33da] recorded, and certainly unique with the missing bracket variety". Robert Gibbs states at pages 97-98 that the missing bracket - SG 33de - is "rare"; and that only two examples of the variety with Double Surcharge (SG 33da; labels 'No 385' used on piece & 'No 386' unused) have been recorded. He doesn't record this double variety. It should be listed by Gibbons as SG 33df, and priced at more than £16,000.

1085 og/nh image1914 5mm Spacing on Marshall Islands '5d.' on 50pf black & purple/buff SG 25 horizontal strip of 10 being the complete Setting 2 [Pos 1-10] Late State with Thin '5' SG 57e [Pos 6], from the top of the sheet with column-values printed in the upper margin, [Pos 1 with Broken 'G'], [Pos 6 with a Very Faint Impression of the 'd' & the Stop Missing and [Pos 6 & 7 both with Defective 'R' appearing like an 'H'], light bends in the left-hand margin, some split perfs where previously folded between units 5 & 6, mounted in the upper margin and where reinforced at the side margins, eight units - including the Thin '5' - are unmounted, Cat £6450++, for mounted singles. Technically, a highly significant piece: Robert Gibbs at page 113 states all this issue were overprinted with "a later state of the second setting". The fact that none of the Broken 'G', the faint 'd' nor the two Deformed 'R's are mentioned by Gibbs indicates the strip must be from one of the last sheets printed.

'G.R.I.' SURCHARGES - Postal History
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
1091 c image1915 (June 8) double-rate social cover to "Mrs Arthur Bunting/Samarai/Papua" with 'G.R.I./2d' on Marshalls 20pf blue SG 53 tied by very fine strike of 'RABAUL/JUN 8 1915/NEW BRITAIN' oval rubber datestamp in violet, two very fine strikes of 'PASSED BY CENSOR' h/s tying plain resealing label at top, very fine 'SAMARAI E.D/11JUN15/PAPUA' arrival b/s. Mr & Mrs Arthur Bunting were Samarai residents. Roger Lee states that mail between New Guinea & Papua "appears minimal up to 1942", and that this item would have been carried by the Burns Philp vessels 'Morinda' or 'Marsina', newly-assigned to the inter-island route. The censor marking was applied locally at Rabaul, but we have not previously seen it used in conjunction with a plain resealing label.
