Brandenburg '19.8.98' arrival alongside, light vertical fold & minor adhesion on reverse.

1899 (Nov 11) usage of German Eagle Postal Card 10pf red with 'Nur für Marine-Schiffsposten' overprint [= Only For Naval Mail] Michel
P1 addressed to a transferred officer originally in care of the German Consul at Singapore with greetings message headed "An bord SMS Deutschland/Hong Kong" signed by the members of the heavy cruiser's officers' mess, two largely fine strikes of the
'KAIS. DEUTSCHE/MARINE-/ SCHIFFSPOST/No.40' cds used on the 'Deutschland I', very fine strike of scarce Hong Kong 'TOO-LATE' h/s (Proud I6; LRD) at U/L then 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE/JAN 18/1900' marine sorter d/s and Singapore 'FE 7' arrival where
re-directed to German New Guinea, very fine 'MATUPI/23/4/00' cds at U/L where again redirected this time to Germany carried by the supply ship SMS 'Möve' [Seagull] with its 'KAIS. DEUTSCHE/MARINE-/SCHIFFSPOST/No.7' cds at L/L, then Kiel '10.6.00' cds
where finally redirected to Admiralty Staff, Berlin after seven months transit, a couple of tiny blemishes mentioned for accuracy only.

1900 (Aug 4) 'Hernsheim & Co, Matupi, B.A.' (= Bismarck Archipelago) envelope to Germany "per Moresby/via Sydney" with
'Deutsch-/Neu-Guinea' Overprints 5pf green pair & 10pf red tied by four very fine strikes of 'MATUPI' cds, Sydney AU 31' duplex b/s, Freiburg '-7.10.00' arrival where opened by mistake (thus endorsed in manuscript) and three 'KAISERL.
DEUTSCHES/Freiburg/(Breisgau)/POSTAMT' resealing lables affixed, a couple of minor blemishes. The letter rate to Germany was 10pf up to 20g and 20pf up to 250g! The Burns Philp & Co SS 'Moresby' steamed between Sydney, Papua and New Guinea until 1915
when sold to the British China Steamship Co, and was sunk by a German U-Boat in the Mediterranean on 28.11.1916. Hernsheim & Co was established by Eduard Hernsheim in 1876, originally in the Duke of York Islands. The firm did extensive business with
the Neu-Guinea Compagnie and operated the Matupi Post Office.

1900 (circa) usage of New South Wales Postal Card 1d Arms Die I to "Hotel Fürst Bismark/Herbertshöhe" with New Year's greetings
message "Prost, Prost, Prost" [Cheers, Cheers, Cheers] signed by six friends, posted on board ship with gothic single-line 'S.M.S. Möve' h/s in black cancelling the indicium otherwise undated, a couple of tiny blemishes. Underpaid ½d but not taxed.
[The 'Möve' was a German supply ship which regularly travalled between Sydney and New Guinea]

1901 (Jan 23) philatelic usage of Postal Card 5pf green Michel P8 to Matupi endorsed "per München" with largely very fine strike of
'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU-/GUINEA-/ZWEIGLINIE/(HONGKONG)' cds with code letter 'a' used on board the steamer 'München', no message. The Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer 'München' ran aground near Yap in the Caroline Islands on 3.2.1901. The cds was
subsequently transferred to the 'Nuen-Tung' which replaced her on the route: see also Lot 1025.

1901 (Feb 20) cover to Germany with Yachts 10pf red tied by light 'HERBERTSHOHE/DEUTSCH-/ NEU-GUINEA' cds, carried by Austro-Hungarian
Magyar Kir. Adria Company ship with large 'Paquebot.' over 'S.S. PETOFI' h/s in violet at U/L as well as 'Kikotoben' [in port] h/s also in violet at U/R, closed opening tear at top and a few minor aging marks. The SS Petofi carried mails from various
German Colonies, but this is the first we know of her carrying an item from the Pacific. On 28.10.1903 she vanished on a voyage between Italy and England, and was never heard from again.

'MATUPI/25/6/01' cds with red & black 'Matupi/R' label alongside, 'WIESBADEN/ 18.8.01' arrival backstamp. The rate was 10pf letter plus 20pf registration fee. The 25pf is very scarce used on correctly-rated items.

missionary & natives, to Berlin with Germany Reichspost 5pf solo tied by largely fine strike of 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU-/GUINEA-/ZWEIGLINIE/(HONGKONG)' cds with code letter 'a' used on board the steamer 'Nuen-Tung', '15/9 01' arrival cds. Transferred
to the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer 'Nuen-Tung' on 3.4.1901 (after the 'München' ran aground), this ship canceller was again transferred to the 'Paknam' on 24.1.1902: see also Lots 1020 & 1025.

MOWE' seal on reverse, to Germany with very fine strike of 'KAIS. DEUTSCHE/MARINE-/SCHIFFPOST/No7' cds used on board the 'Möve' [Seagull], Kiel '21.10.01' arrival b/s, vertical fold & slightly trimmed at left, plus a very fine real photo postcard of
the ship's officers in dress uniform (unused). The German Navy supply ship 'Möve' served in New Guinea waters from 1895 to 1905, making regular trips to Australia.

on the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer 'Nuen-Tung' from 3.4.1901 (transferred to her after the 'München' ran aground at Yap) until 24.1.1902 only, when it was transferred to the 'Paknam': see also Lots 1020 & 1023.

1903 (Aug 18) usage of Postal Card 5pf green to Germany, the lengthy personal message on reverse headed from "Sattelberg" and endorsed
"p[er] Finschhafen" with 'FINSCHHAFEN/DEUTSCH-/NEU-GUINEA/26.7' cds, very fine. Sattelberg was the site of a Lutheran mission founded by Johann Flierl in 1892 on a peak about 900m above sea level; it did not have a Post Office, and mail was carried
to Finschhafen for processing.
