1908 (Sept 26) irregular usage from Germany of DNG 5pf+5pf Reply Postal Card to a passenger on board the survey ship "S.M.S. Planet,
Australien, Berlin Marine-Postbüro" [Maritime PO] with Germania 5pf added tied 'COLN' cds with another strike on the printed indicium, returned unseparated with message headed "Manus 30/11 08 (Admiralitaetsinsel)" and largely very fine strike of
'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU-/GUINEA/ ZWEIGLINIE/27 11/08' cds with code letter 'c' used on board the steamship 'Prinz Waldemar', a couple of very minor blemishes. A remarkable usage, all the more so for being returned from remote Manus Island in the
Admiralty Group almost 400km NNE of Madang. The Post Office at Manus did not open until 6.12.1912, closing in late-1914 upon the Australian Occupation.

1908 (Dec 29) to "Herrn W Halm/Constantinhafen" with German New Guinea Yachts 10pf red with 'Siar' rubber h/s in violet endorsed
"29/12/08" in black ink and 'FRIEDRICH-WILHELMSHAFEN/16 1/09' cds struck alongside, slightly trimmed at right clear of stamp, a few trivial blemishes. A rare shipboard cover from a German coastal steamer to a remote domestic destination.
The SS 'Siar' was owned by the Neu-Guinea Compagnie. Friedemann at page 748 states "The captain cancelled, without specific authority, postal matter which was delivered after the close of the local post office, or matter originating in localities
without postal facilities ... Postage stamps cancelled in this fashion were sometimes also subsequently cancelled with the regular canceller of the next post office". The NGC set up a station at Konstantinhafen on Astrolabe Bay & its Post Office
opened 15.5.1888, but closed on 30.9.1891. Having been posted on board the SS 'Siar', the item was put ashore at the nearest Post Office some 2½ weeks later and carried overland to destination.

Juli" [end July] and a largely fine strike of 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/ JALUIT-/LINIE/2 8/10' cds with code letter 'b' used on board the steamer 'Germania', a couple of minor blemishes. The Jaluit Line operated between New Guinea, the Marshall, Caroline &
Mariana Islands and Hong Kong. Pelau (Palau) lies between the Phillipines and the Carolines. Following its defeat in the 1898 Spanish-American War, Spain sold all these island groups to Germany.

1912 (July 7) registered cover to Germany with 'VIA SIBERIA' h/s, Yachts 10pf & 20pf and Germany 10pf all tied by three light but
legible strikes of 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU-/GUINEA-/ZWEIGLINIE/21 2/12' cds with code letter 'a', black & red/white registration label inscribed 'Deutsche Seepost/Neu-Guinea-Zweiglinie' alongside with boxed 'Reichspostdampfer/Coblenz' h/s in blue,
Löderburg arrival b/s of 11.8.1912, a couple of tiny blemishes. It appears that the item was originally posted franked only with the two DNG stamps for the 10pf letter rate to Germany (up to 20g) plus 20pf registration fee, but was found to be
overweight and the Germania 10pf added to pay the additional letter rate up to 250g.

1913 (July 27) PPC 'Eingeborener vom Huon Golf zum Kakadu-Tanz geschmünckt' [=Huon Gulf Native dressed for Kakadu dance] endorsed from
"Matupi Rabaul", to Germany with Germania 5pf & German New Guinea Yachts 5pf both tied by three largely fine strikes of 'KAIS. DEUTSCHE/MARINE-/SCHIFFPOST/No8' cds used on board the 'Cormoran', a couple of minor blemishes. Either stamp was sufficient
to pay the postcard rate to Germany; it appears the sender was concerned that the Germania stamp may not have been valid for use in New Guinea.

1914 (June 22) large linen-backed banker's cover (217x140mm) with 'REICHSBANK-HAUPKASSE/[Eagle]' h/s in blue on reverse and
pre-printed 'Einschreiben' [= Registration] on face, to "Gouvernments- Hauptkasse/in/Rabaul" [= Government Treasury] endorsed per "Princess Alice" with Germania 40pf solo tied by Berlin cds and red & black/white 'Berlin 111' R label, unusally without
any transit or arrival markings, a few aging marks and rounded U/L corner.
Upon the outbreak of WWI on 28.7.1914 the North German Lloyd 'Princess Alice' was steaming between Singapore & Hong Kong en route to Rabaul. To avoid capture, she diverted to the neutral port of Cebu in the Philippine Islands, where she was
impounded. In 1917 she was seized by the US, renamed 'Princess Matoika' and used as a troop transport for the remainder of the war. It is not known what happened to the contents of the envelope, but it certainly never reached its intended
destination.
