The Richard F. Larkin Gold Medal Collection of Booklet Panes and Covers: United States & Possessions - May 7, 2024

We are honored to present Richard F. Larkin’s exceptional collection of US and Possessions booklets and panes. Born in Staten Island, NY, in 1942, Richard received his AB from Harvard in 1964 and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1968. Following graduation, he served two years in the Peace Corps in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, worked for Price Waterhouse & Co. for 32 years, and retired from BDO Seidman (now BDO USA) in 2020 after a 20-year career. His interests are wide-ranging, spanning choral singing and genealogy to travel and photography.

Richard has collected stamps from childhood, focusing on booklets since his 20s. Over the years, his specialized collection has grown to include Specimens, Essays and Proofs, production sheets of panes and booklet covers, on-cover uses, as well as numerous rarities and unique items. Among the many highlights offered here are two unique Specimen panes of #279Bj with inverted overprint, a large die proof for booklet cover #BC4A, complete covers for both 1¢ and 2¢ A.E.F. booklets along with numerous 1¢ panes by position and two 2¢ panes, a #C25a single-franked cover carried by Walter Goodman during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, plus a sound Canal Zone #31a single used, the unique block of 16 #39e, the sole intact booklet of #39f, Philippines handstamped “Victory” panes, along with production Proofs and Specimens from the American Bank Note Co. archives.

Richard is a member of the Canal Zone Study Group, United States Stamp Society, American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors, and American Philatelic Society. Over the 50 years of exhibiting his collection, Richard has won one national grand and one reserve grand award, several golds, and four international vermeils.
