1946 (Aug. 9), Envelope carried by Walter Goodman during the Atomic Bomb Drop over Nagasaki (Scott C25a), complete and unexploded, with handwritten note from Goodman dated May 8, 1946 that reads, "Dear Mr. Parker, Enclosed are two envelopes both of which were in my pocket during my flight over the Empire. I had taken along six envelopes with sufficient stationery to write some letters but found very little time to do any writing. I brought these envelopes back and used them later in the week. I do hope they will be of use to you. Yours, Walter Goodman" accompanied by cover that carried this note and the two covers addressed to Robert Parker at the "Airmail Club" in New York City, and one of the two envelopes carried by Goodman on the mission which he used to send a letter to his wife postmarked exactly one week later on August 16, 1946, franked with #C25a single and red pen note "This envelope was carried on the Atomic Bombing Mission of Nagasaki from Tinian in the B-29 observation Super fortress #89 Aug. 9, 1945, Walter Goodman, Scientific Observer", Very Fine.

The bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Goodman, along with Lawrence H. Johnston and NY Times correspondent William L. Laurence, were on board the instrumentation aircraft, The Great Artiste, as part of the mission. Goodman took motion pictures of the mushroom cloud above Nagasaki. Walter Goodman joined the Special Engineer Detachment at Los Alamos in 1943, where he worked as an electrical engineer on the implosion bomb with Manhattan Project scientists Luis Alvarez and Harold Agnew. He also witnessed the Trinity test. (Image) (Image2) (Image3)

Airmail booklet, 1949, 73¢, red cover, "Not Issued" handstamps (Scott BKC4 var.), complete and unexploded, with purple straightline handstamps on both miscut covers with two very miscut panes (#C39a var.) with interleaving, o.g., never hinged, Very Fine. Interestingly, the staples line up the text on the booklet panes. Accompanied by article on the booklet published in the August 1962 issue of The Bureau Specialist asking for information or additional examples, but there was no follow-up article.
