c image1845 (Sept 9) lengthy entire headed "Felixstow nr Adelaide" with a postscript of "Oct 3rd 1845" both signed "Thos L Stow", to the Congregational Library in London with a light but obvious strike of the huge '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE/SA/14--14/1845' datestamp & rated "9" (?), London arrival backstamp of 31MR31/1846 in red & rated "1/4" double-rate payable by the recipient. Thomas Quinton Stow was pastor of the first Congregational Church in Adelaide. His home 'Felixstow' was 7km NE of the city and remains the name of the adjacent suburb. The contents relate to a dispute between Stow and a member of his flock. Ex Don Pearce.

c image1845 (Dec 8) lengthy & overweight entire signed "John Roberts/Maesbury house Kensington/near Adelaide", to "Congregational rooms/...London" endorsed "pr Taglioni" and with light but clear strike of the huge '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE/SA' on the reverse rated "8", British 'SHIP- LETTER' handstamp in black & London arrival backstamp of 27AP27/1846 in red where rated "1/4" double-rate payable by the recipient, minor blemishes. Maesbury House has been described as "the oldest house in Adelaide's oldest suburb" and is still standing. Built in 1843 for property developer, John Roberts, who here complains of Rev Stow's behavior (see previos Lot). Ex Don Pearce.

c image1847 (Jan 1; New Year's Day) envelope to London "p Canton" with largely very fine strike of '[crown]/PAID/ 1JA1/1846' datestamp in red (the year amended to "7" in manuscript) rated "6[d]" outward ship letter rate, on arrival the original rating crossed-out & rated "8[d]" for an inwards shipletter with 'SHIP-LETTER' handstamp & London arrival of 18MY18/1847 on the reverse, minor blemishes. The addressee Charles J Heath had been allocated town blocks of land at the first survey for the site of Adelaide.  This is the first Paid marking known from Adelaide (recorded from 18.11.1846 only). From 1848 onwards it is characteristically found without date slugs or struck partly off the edge so that the date is not visible (see Lots 571 & 575 below). Complete strikes with date are thus very scarce (Dr Don Pearce's collection did not include one).

c image1847 (Aug 11) outer to London endorsed "per La Belle Alliance to Singapore & Overland Mail" with very fine 'G.P.O/[crown]/SOUTH AUSTRALIA' cds rated "6[d]" outward ship letter, London arrival backstamp of 28DE28/1847 where rated "1/-" inwards packet letter rate, light vertical fold clear of the Adelaide marking. The La Belle Alliance was a passenger ship which had arrived in Adelaide on 2.7.1847 with 294 emigrants on board. Carried from Singapore by P&O contract packets Lady Mary Wood, Precursor & Hindustan, hence the 1/- British charge (rather than 8d for a ship letter). Another unusual routing indicating just how infrequent direct sailings to England were in the early days of the Colony.

c image1848 (March 28) entire headed "Adelaide" signed "JG Tower" to his uncle in Essex, endorsed "p.p." [Postage Paid], largely very fine almost complete 'G.P.O/[crown]/MA*30/1848/SOUTH AUSTRALIA' cds, rated "6[d]" outward ship letter rate, London transit backstamp where the original rating crossed-out & rated "1/-" inwards packet letter rate, 'BRENTWOOD/SE21/1848' arrival cds unusally on the face, minor blemishes. Carried by private ship to Sydney and then by Toulmin Packet 'Tropic', arrived Salcombe on or about 21.9.1848. The letter states in part "... land is being bought all around the place and by the time I get my remittance...I shall have to go 200 or 300 miles out into the bush...".

c image1850 (June 18) entire to London "pr Trafalgar via Bombay" with largely fine` GPO cds in blue, rated "9[d]" up to 1oz outward ship letter rate, London arrival backstamp of 22AU22/1850 where rated "2/8[d]" double inwards 1/- packet letter rate plus double 4d India letter, minor blemishes. Per Trafalgar as a shipletter to Bombay (with a cargo of copper), by East India Company contract steamer to Suez, overland and P&O 'Indus' to Southampton (and hence the packet letter charge). This routing gave access to steamships rather than sailing ships for the legs from India, but at a cost that was prohibitive for most. The letter includes interesting snippets such as "we landed two Piano Fortes and one case Millenery...the former we hope to place shortly at remunerating prices but the latter we find too good & expensive for this place"!

Per auxiliary steamer Cleopatra, whose cargo included 22,000 ounces of gold from the Victorian diggings. [It is unclear what was mined this early at Woodside, in the Adelaide Hills, but it probably wasn't gold. The Grovermann family came from Denmark & were farming at O'Halloran Hill by 1851]

c image1854 (Dec 21) envelope to England "p Antelope steamer" with largely fine 'GAWLER/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA=' cds (UF1) in red, marked "Paid" with "6[d]" in red, very fine to superb 'ADELAIDE' cds (UF2-1; ERD) backstamp and '[crown]/PAID' handstamp on the face both in red, Liverpool 'PAID/.../SHIP/AP16/1855' tombstone transit in red on the face and 'WAKEFIELD' arrival backstamp of the next day, some edge re-inforced faults & opened out for display. The earliest known item from South Australia at the 6d 'all-in' ship letter rate, and the only known pre-stamp item at this rate. On 1.10.1854 a general ship letter rate of 6d per ½oz including all inland delivery charges was introduced between Great Britain and the Colonies of New South Wales, South Australia & Victoria. Tabeart states at page 43 that "the earliest letter from South Australia seen under these regulations left Adelaide on 3 January 1855 [after the issue of South Australia's first postage stamp on 1.1.1855], but there were earlier opportunities". The non-contract screw steamer Antelope had left Sydney on 14.12.1854 and Melbourne on 18.12.1854, with the Melbourne Argus reporting that she was to go via Adelaide, King George's Sound, Cape of Good Hope and Madeira.

c image1856 (March 3) mercantile entire to Scotland "Per Mermaid" with largely fine strike of 'G.P.O/MR 6/1856/=ADELAIDE.S.A=' cds in black on the face indicating an unpaid letter and very fine 'd/1' large accountancy marking handstamp at lower-right, on arrival 'd/6' postage due handstamp applied on the face with Liverpool 'AUSTRALIAN/PACKET' transit and 'CUPAR FIFE/JN11/1856' arrival cds in green on reverse, vertical file fold affecting the postage due marking. Carried by the White Star Line 'Mermaid' contract clipper ship; also on board were 99 passengers, 37,020 ounces of gold, 50,000 sovereigns and a cargo of wool. After the general ship letter rate of 6d per ½oz was introduced 1.10.1854, it was necessary to account for each administration's share of the postage comprising 4d ship letter plus 1d inland delivery at either end. In this instance, the Adelaide marking indicates 1d due to South Australia from the British PO, which was to collect the whole of the 6d postage from the recipient. This cumbersome system came to an end in early-1857 with the compulsory pre-payment of mails, each administration retaining the postage it collected.

Per private ship, the accountancy marking indicating 3d credit to the British PO for a non-contract ship letter. Inman Valley PO 1.1.1855; closed 27.2.1981. Apart from that illustrated in the Handbook (dated 30.11.1854), this is the only other recorded example of this postmaster endorsement. Inman Valley was issued Diamond Numeral '77' (rated RRRR; recorded from 1855), but its first datestamp (also RRRR) is not recorded until 1859. Dr Don Pearce's 1859 cover with numeral & datestamp tie sold for $2400.
