Cat £200 x5 on cover) tied by GPO cds of AU24/69, minor blemishes; plus enclosed letter headed "Robe/Augt 16 1869" which states "...We had a dreadful stormy voyage and...a man very nearly lost his life by falling into the sea...". The letter confirms
that the cover was carried privately back from Robe & posted on arrival at Adelaide. RPSofV Certificate (2011) for the then SG 125.

Irregular Compound Perf 10x10x11½-12½x10 6d Prussian blue SG 105 tied by GPO cds, London arrival cds of AP15/71, repaired flap-tear & minor blemishes. Ex Don Pearce. The via Brindisi route was available from late-1869 after the completion of the
railway link to the port. This route was little-used until the Franco-Prussian War terminated the via Marseilles route. With P&O replacing Italian packets, the rate was reduced from 1/1d to 9d per ½oz from 26.1.1871.

"Bloomfield Douglas Esq/Klang/Selangor/via Singapore" with De La Rue Perf 10 2d x2 & '8 PENCE' on Perkins Bacon 9d pale brown tied by GPO duplex, no transit or arrival markings, light central vertical fold. A truly exotic destination in this period:
from Victoria, Ben Palmer lists no pre-UPU mail to any part of Malaya.
Klang was the Royal capital of Selangor before 1880 when Kuala Lumpur emerged as the main centre. The Klang Valley was a key centre for tin mining. Bloomfield Douglas was the first British Resident in Selangor and, when the post office opened in
1879, the first Klang postmaster. Kuala Lumpur PO opened 1881. The motto is of the Ayers Family. The sender was probably Henry Ayres who arrived in 1840, managing the major copper mining company at the Burra. His North Terrace home, Ayers House, is
still standing.

AU10/78 & part-'[GREEN]WICH' (?) cds of two days later, missing flap, minor blemishes & opened-out. Ex Don Pearce. The via Brindisi rate was 9d per ½oz, but the item had only paid the via Sounthampton 6d rate, and was forwarded on that route.

PENCE' on Perkins Bacon 9d burnt umber tied 'WHYTE YARCOWIE' cds (rated R), the reverse with 'RAILWAY PO/S - A', London cds of 23AP/83 in red and 'CAPE TOWN/MY17/83/ CAPE COLONY' transits, rated "3" in red (at London ?) & "4" in black (at Cape Town
?). Another extraordinary pre-UPU destination, both before the annexation of Walvis Bay by the Cape of Good Hope, and the establishment of German South West Africa, both in 1884.
From Victoria, Ben Palmer lists ten pre-UPU covers to the Cape and two to Natal, but none to South-West Africa. "Walwich Bay" is an acknowledged variant of Walvis or Whale Bay (English), or Walvisbaar (Afrikaans), or Walfischbucht (German) - take
your pick - the British enclave in the German colony of South West Africa. From the 1840s, Otyimbingue/Otjimbingwe, 300km inland from the Atlantic coast, was a German missionary centre. It became prominent when copper was discovered in 1854 and,
between 1884 & 1892, it was the de facto capital of the new German colony, before the administration moved to Windhoek.

England with very fine 'DORKING' arrival backstamp and rated "5"[d] to pay, some staining but still quite presentable. Ex Don Pearce. A good example of the postal authorities preventing mail being sent to an unintended country. The via Brindisi rate
to Germany was 9d per ½oz.

backstamp of 29/APR/87 and Italian Postage Dues 50c pair with 'MILANO' cds, minor blemishes. Yet another remarkable cover, being the only pre-UPU item we have seen with South Australian stamps cancelled in another colony.

 1891 (Jan 12) Winch Brothers cover with extremely rare franking of Perf 11½-12½x10 '2½d.' on 4d SG 231 tied by 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/S.A
- S AUSTRALIA' duplex, very fine 'COLCHESTER/FE15/91' arrival backstamp. Rare usage of the surcharge in the first month of issue and Harry Lower stated this is the only cover recorded with this stamp.
The Australian Colonies had been advised of admission to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) from 1.1.1891, with a standard overseas letter rate of 2½d. However, admission was delayed (until 1.10.1891), and the new rate revoked by mid-February, except
for mail to GB. Any letters from this 6-week period are very elusive.
