551 E imageESSAY: Skilfully executed elaborate artwork for a 2d design in India ink on a postcard-size piece of thin card, the numeral '2' in Chinese white, endorsed at lower-left "Finis Coronat Opus" (the pseudonym of Maximilian Tannenberg, whose designs for the 2½d & 5d stamps were adopted). A superb essay. While it might appear that this was an essay for a Postal Card, it is believed to have been submitted for a proposed Envelope issue. Sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $1005.

552 E imageESSAY: 1896 Post Office Design Competition entry by "Kangaroo" of a Wrapper ½d Coin design with very elaborate (and consequently unsuitable) header incorporating numerous design elements including a train & a spear-toting aborigine, expertly executed in reddish purple & Chinese white on thin card (315x246mm) with a number of marginal endorsements including "Prize divided" as well as "take out newspaper only", suggesting the design might have been considered for a Postal Card, for which it was clearly more suitable; plus an apparent voting sheet showing this as the most popular entry. A stunning exhibition item that was absent from the Walker/Eustis Collection. Sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $3775.

560 c image1841 (Nov 29 annotation) folded outer to England endorsed "per 'Marys' to Hobart Town" and "Paid/6" in another hand for the outward ship letter rate with a largely fine strike of the by-now badly worn 'POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE' handstamp with the inner ring & central ornament almost completely omitted, on arrival rated "8[d]" for an inwards shipletter with 'SHIP-LETTER' handstamp, London transit & 'NORTH SHIELDS/ MY11/1842' arrival backstamps, minor blemishes & horizontal file fold affecting the Adelaide marking. A most unusual routing via Tasmania, presumably to catch an earlier ship than would have been available from Adelaide, indicating just how infrequent direct sailings to England were in the early days of the Colony.
