303   imagePacific Union Express Co., New York, Jul. 3., blue double circle handstamp (PAU-101) with "5" manuscript day date correction on 1864 3¢ pink entire with rare black Pacific Union printed frank to Treasure City, Nevada, lightly soiled, Very Fine, a wonderful item with this rare black frank used on transcontinental mail, much the way the Wells, Fargo & Co. red franks were used on their transcontinental mail, express uses from New York are quite rare, especially from companies other than Wells, Fargo. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. Rare New York PAU-101 hand stamp which is only found on the black franks applied to indicia. 327   image(Tracy & Spear's Express) T&S, manuscript with boxed "Paid" used as frank on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire used as a paste-up, carried from the Placerville area to San Francisco, operating north of Placerville T&S turned this letter over to the Wells Fargo at Spanish Flat with cds for November applied (we know from other letters that the agent at Spanish Flat was using the same canceling device for both the U.S. Mail and WF material), from Spanish Flat the letter was carried north by Wells Fargo to its center at Georgetown where it received four oval handstamps on the back side and one on front, Wells Fargo then carried it to San Francisco, Very Fine. Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. A GREAT EXPRESS RARITY WITH ONLY TWO EXAMPLES KNOWN. THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE IN COLLECTOR'S HANDS AS THE OTHER IS IN THE WILTSEE COLLECTION. Tracy & Spear's Express is very rare as it operated but a few months in 1858 around the city of Placerville. By 1859 Spear had departed and Theodore Tracy was working as Wells Fargo's agent in Placerville. In 1864 he became the mayor of Placerville. His brother, Edward was his agent at some earlier point and in 1859 moved to Portland to start his own express operation in conjunction with Wells Fargo. (Image1)

Estimate  $3,000 - 4,000. A STUNNING WASHBURN'S EXPRESS USE WITH GREAT EYE APPEAL BEARING THE 3¢ 1852 ISSUE. According to Thomas, this express is believed to have worked the mining camps along the northern Yuba River. He may have operated between Marysville, California and Camptonville, Cal. Scott No. 65  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THIS KENSON'S OWENS RIVER EXPRESS FRANK IN COMBINATION WITH THE SAN CARLOS DISTRICT HANDSTAMP. Only one example from each of the two different frank types is known from this very rare Eastern Sierra/Nevada Express. This is considered to be the earlier example frank type of the two known and it is the only one that contains both the Kenson's Frank and Kenson hand stamp. The last time this item was offered in public was the Harmer Silver Sale of 1997. At that time this item sold for $4,250 plus commission. It is the key to any Inyo County Express Collection. Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. THE ONLY KNOWN USED EXAMPLE OF THE PANAMINT PONY EXPRESS FRANK ENTIRE. It is believed that fewer than five unused examples of this frank are known. This express was the last pony service used in the old west. It was used to transport mail over a distance of 200 miles using six relays of horses between the ghost town of Darwin, Inyo County, thence over the Cajon Pass and on to San Bernardino, California. Scott No. 143L8+U34  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. A REMARKABLE AND UNIQUE DOUBLE PONY EXPRESS USAGE CARRIED BY WELLS, FARGO & CO. VIRGINIA CITY PONY EXPRESS AND THE KENSON'S PONY EXPRESS FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO THE COSO MINING DISTRICT. Only a few of the Virginia City Ponies are double express usage. The other examples, which are believed to be two, started in the east bay and were carried by Bamber Express and turned over to Wells Fargo. This is the only Virginia City Pony cover known that Wells Fargo turned over to another express. The town of Aurora had just been determine (9/16/1863) by a boundary survey to be in Esmeralda County, Nevada. Before that the town's Post Office was known as Esmeralda and the town was believed located in Mono County, California. This cover traveled from San Francisco by steamer to Sacramento, then to Placerville by train and then by pony over the Sierra's to Carson City, Nevada and then down the back side of the Sierras Mountains to Aurora. The pony run from Placerville to Aurora was a distance of about 160 miles. At Aurora, Wells Fargo turned the cover over to Kenson's Pony Express who then carried it south, passing back into California, running next to Owens Lake to Willow Springs which was located east of Coso Junction, Inyo County. Express, Indian Diggins, clear brownish oval handstamp on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, black early printed frank type (WFE-020); reduced at right a bit into indicia, a Very Fine strike, with only two examples known from this gold ghost town. Estimate  $500 - 750. The other example set a record for a Wells Fargo handstamp in our December 2002 auction when it sold from Basil Pierce's Collection for $4,600 and then resold several years later for over $3,000. This example is a sister to the above listed cover being reduced slightly at the right but strike equal in quality in all respects. Both examples are addressed to Kimball (Noisy Carriers) on Long Wharf. (Image1)
