Estimate  $300 - 400. Silver Mountain, originally called "Kongsberg", was a ghost town founded in the late 1850's-early 1860's by Scandinavian miners prospecting for silver. By 1863, the name was changed to Silver Mountain City. By 1866, the town had a population of 3,000 and was the seat of Alpine County from 1864 to 1875. The demonetization of silver in 1873 caused its decline and was pretty much abandoned by 1886. (Image1)

Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. AN EARLY LETTER FROM BOSTON TO SHIP "VANDALIA" ON COAST OF UPPER CALIFORNIA WITH THE RARE THOMAS O. LARKIN OF MONTEREY, ALTA CALIFORNIA FORWARDING HANDSTAMP, THE FIRST AND ONLY UNITED STATES CONSUL TO ALTA CALIFORNIA. Letters to the West Coast of North America prior to January 1849 were carried privately and forwarded by a network of agents and U.S. consuls making use of whatever vessels were available.Thomas O. Larkin arrived in California in 1832 and was appointed the first and only U.S. Consul to Alta California (then part of Mexico) at Monterey on May 1, 1843 by President James K. Polk. This was to become a turbulent time leading up to Mexican War and Larkin played an important part in diplomatic relations. He also served as a mail forwarder in addition to other diplomatic duties until 1846, when war broke out with Mexico and he was captured by the Mexican Army. (Image1)

Cal., sharp strike of fancy box handstamp on cover to Holly Springs Miss. bearing 3¢ orange brown (10A) horizontal pair, deep rich color, large margins except just in at top right, right stamp tear, tied by "San Francisco Cal. 1 Jan" cds; small cover tear and stain spot, a Very Fine and scarce use with the 3¢ orange brown. Estimate  $500 - 750. Noisy Carriers acted as a forwarder in San Francisco and sent mails to the east by both the Panama and Nicaragua routes. The proprietor, Charles P. Kimball (1821-1894) was active during the period of the rate change for over 3,000 miles from 6¢ to 10¢ on April 1st 1855. (Image1)

S. Adams at Howell Me., endorsed "Via Tehauntepec" at bottom left; some edge wear and back faults, Fine and rare, ex-Skinner. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. In October 1858, a route was contracted as 8162 from San Francisco to New Orleans using a mixed steamboat and overland route via the Tehuantepec Isthmus in Mexico. Contracted at $250,000 for 12 months with twice a month service. The course of the route was by steamboat to either Acapulco or Salina Cruz, then overland by mule to Suchile, then by river boat to Minatitlan on the Caotzacoalcos River and then by steamboat to New Orleans, La. The route was little used as the section over the mountain range by mule created a long transit time. The total revenue collected for the route was just $5,276.66 and the route was not renewed in 1859. From October 1858 to March 1859, the "Quaker City" was used on the New Orleans to Minatitlan portion of the route. A total of 25 covers endorsed as going "Via Tehuantepec" are recorded in the census. The Steamer Southerner was first outfitted for the Law's Line as the Steamer Isthmus (500 tones) and first arrived in San Francisco on May 9, 1850. The Isthmus was acquired by The Pacific Mail Line, renamed Southerner and in 1854 was operating between San Diego and San Francisco. Heston's Express, Visalia, manuscript endorsement (HES-101) on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Keysville, uprated with 1851, 3¢ dull red (11) and tied by "San Francisco, Cal., Oct 13, 1857" cds, postal carried from San Francisco to Visalia and then by express to Keysville; some corner wear, otherwise Very Fine, the only manuscript known from this express. Estimate  $500 - 750. Early in 1863 Thomas Heston was involved in a gun fight with a doctor from Visalia over a "family matter". Many shots were exchanged by the two men on the main street of Visalia. Two bullets struck the doctor mortify wounding him. He died later in the day. The last bullet fired by the doctor struck the gun that Heston was using blowing it out of his hand. Later, in June of the same year, Thomas Heston disappeared after leaving Camp Independence bound for Visalia with express material. At first it was thought that he had run afoul of the Indians that were uprising in the area at this time. The following year, after the melting of the winter snows, his bones were found on the eastern slope of the Sierra Mountains in Nine Mile Canyon most likely murdered by family or friends of the Doctor. Heston started an express servicing the mining camps along the King River between Horintos, the San Joaquin River crossing at Millerton and Visalia, connecting with Wells Fargo. Later he established a stage line between Visalia and Hornitos. After selling his stage line, he started a pack mule express service that crossed the Sierra Mountains from Visalia to the Coso Mining area and on to Camp Independence. Of the two known Heston's Express handstamps, one is struck in blue and this example in black. Both are on Wells, Fargo & Co. franked entires. (Image1)

Estimate  $300 - 400. THE UNIQUE LANGTON'S FOREST CITY MARKING IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL LANGTON HANDSTAMPS. Starting in Alleghany, Sierra Co., this entire then moved north to Forest City where a red straight line cancel was applied to the front and back of envelope. Langton carried, most likely to Placerville, on to San Francisco and from there to New York. Placed in the U.S. Mail at New York but postal authorities required the addition of 1861 3¢ stamp because the blue Alleghany oval had canceled the indicia. (Image1)

287   imageNichols & Co.'s Express, Paid., fancy illustrated printed frank on cover to San Francisco, franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 3¢ dull red additionally tied by red "Nichols & Co's Express, San Francisco" oval handstamp; minor tone spots, Very Fine, a very rare Nichols & Co.'s Express usage with only a few known bearing their San Francisco handstamp. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. C. P. Nichols and Edward Ludlow started their express in the spring of 1858, carrying mail between San Francisco and San Jose, and eventually expanding their routes northward; their distinctive express frank pictures a dog guarding a safe, sailing schooner, steam vessel and railroad train, and it was printed on plain envelopes and on 3¢ entires. Nichols & Co. eventually sold out to American Express, who adopted the same woodcut frank. (Image1)
