The so-called "Biscuit Grill", bold strike of New York City Segmented Diamond Within Circle cancellation, known used in July 1867 and evidently applied to a number of experimental grills to test the efficacy of grilling, Fine and very rare, only approximately 12-15 examples are known, accompanied by a normal No. 78 with the same cancel, unequivocally demonstrating its use on stamps sent through the mails, few short perfs, Fine, this trial cancel and its use on both regular mail and the grill essays was the subject of an article in Chronicle 134 (Image)

239 Ebl ImageNational Bank Note Co., 3c Rose, All-Over Pinpoint Grill Essay, Points Up (79-E15d). The so-called "Music Box Grill", bottom imprint and plate no. 11 block of 12, original gum, h.r. on corner stamps, seven of the eight middle stamps are Mint N.H., the middle block of eight which contains the entire plate block with outstanding centering, small fault between stamps at left outside the plate block, gum soaks in selvage at left also mostly outside the plate block, few short perfs at right again outside the plate block

A RARE LARGE MULTIPLE OF THE ALL-OVER "MUSIC BOX" 3-CENT 1861 ISSUE GRILL ESSAY, WITH AN EXTREMELY FINE PLATE BLOCK OF EIGHT.

As impressive as this piece appears in its 12-stamp format, condition conscious collectors could easily remove the end pairs at left and right and be left with an Extremely Fine plate block of eight. Power Search contains only three other plate blocks of this essay. Two of the others are points down and two are points up. None are as well-centered as the plate block of eight contained here.

Sep. 24, 1867" trial cancels, the datestamp is partly struck but clear enough to identify its nature, fresh and Fine, the only recorded example of an 1861 Issue essay with this cancel, the 3c 1869 Issue is known imperforate on stamp paper with the same cancel dated Sep. 27, 1869, they are also rare but we have encountered a number of them, this is the only 1861 Issue essay we have encountered with this cancel, ex Earl of Crawford (Image)
