Bold and clear strike of circular datestamp with year in manuscript, "PAID" straightline with ambiguous "6 cts" rating (or possibly "C cts"), also with manuscript "Due 5 cts" on cover to Moonfield Va. with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Southern Rights" Banner Patriotic design (F7-9), "Parrott, Alexandria" imprint, corner and edge flaws including small mend at bottom left corner

VERY FINE APPEARING AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS "SOUTHERN RIGHTS" PATRIOTIC FLAG DESIGN WITH THE "PARROTT, ALEXANDRIA" IMPRINT.

Although the concept of States' Rights is referred to in verses on Patriotic covers, this is the only flag design which incorporates the words "Southern Rights." Other examples we have encountered were published by T. S. Whitaker of Wilmington N.C (including on the letter offered in lot 1484). This Parrott, Alexandria imprint, also found on the cover offered in lot 1479, is undoubtedly rare and is unlisted in the C.S.A. Catalog for this design.

EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS SMALL 7-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN, IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. A GREAT RARITY MADE EVEN MORE DESIRABLE BY THE COLLEGE USE.

Fleetwood Academy, a military school for boys located in King and Queen County Virginia, was founded in 1839 by Oliver White. Modeling itself after the Virginia Military Institute, Fleetwood was noted for offering courses in mathematics, Greek, French, and natural philosophy, with an estimated yearly enrollment of thirty-five to forty cadets (source: revolvy.com).
