Hale, editor of Godey's Lady's Book in Philadelphia Pa., with greenish-blue woodcut "Jan. 9th 1861, Mississippi is King" Patriotic design (FM-2), depicting a bale of cotton with an eagle inside a five-pointed star, bold manuscript "Sundries" written on face, opened at top and right with barest hint of reduction

FINE. THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THIS MISSISSIPPI SECESSION PATRIOTIC DESIGN -- MADE EVEN MORE DESIRABLE BY THE CONFEDERATE STATE USE FROM SOUTH TO NORTH.

This exceptional Patriotic design depicting a bale of cotton, surrounded by the Mississippi secession date and "King" slogan, is unique. Sarah Josepha Hale (1788-1879), who was the author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb", was appointed editor of Godey's Lady's Book in 1837. She brought significant substance and advancements to this magazine, which was intended to entertain, inform and educate women (and was also widely read by men). It had the widest circulation of any magazine before the Civil War, reaching 150,000 in 1860.

The verse on this design is particularly fervent, with a very questionable sentiment. It reads, "Death to each marauding band, who would defile this glorious land-- The white and black man's Dixie! For e'en our slaves would take a hand, To drive the foe from Dixie!"
