VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS CONFEDERATE STATES MAIL BOAT CORNER CARD.

This address in the same hand is found on a Cushing's Express Trans-Mississippi cover. They were probably addressed by Capt. Watson Dugat Williams, Co. F., 5th Texas Regiment, who married Laura Bryan in 1865.

The Confederate packet James Battle advertised service on the Alabama River from Mobile and Montgomery. It was captured as a blockade runner in November 1863 and put into service for the North.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE NAME-OF-BOAT HANDSTAMP FOR THE STEAMER TWILIGHT, STRUCK ON A COVER BEARING THE FIRST CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE.

The Twilight operated on the Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers. The oval handstamp had a changeable slug for the day -- the other day we have seen is Saturday.

1435 c Image10c Blue, Die B (12). A remarkable pair of Alabama River steamboat covers, both blue envelopes addressed to George Tuthill at Mobile; one with four-margin stamp tied by "Mobile Ala." double-circle datestamp, date unclear, directive "Per 'Le Grande' with Bucket, Post. not paid", the Le Grande was built at New Albany in 1856 and served as a Confederate troop and supply ship until Dec. 1864 when she was sunk to avoid capture; the second is a turned cover, mailed first to Col. James L. White at the Selma Arsenal, 10c Greenish Blue, Die B (12), large margins to just touching, tied by indistinct "Mobile Ala. Nov 8" double-circle datestamp, turned and addressed to Tuthill at Mobile with directive "Per Str. Com. Farrand", the Commodore Farrand was built in 1859 as the James M. Brown in Mobile, re-named in 1863 when Ebenezer Farrand was appointed commandant of the Alabama area, captured and sold at auction in 1865; both covers skillfully cleaned, the former with an expert repair in backflap (a contemporary message appears to have been cut away, perhaps by the addressee), Alabama and Mobile River steamboat covers are exceedingly rare, these were carried by Confederate naval vessels, ex Everett (Image)
