Block of four, large margins all around, each cancelled by two neat parallel penstrokes on blue-ruled homemade cover carried on eastbound Trans-Mississippi Express to Fayetteville N.C., sender's directive "Via Alexandria", red "Alexandria La. Jan. 31" (1864) circular datestamp applied in transit, cover is an adversity use constructed from part of an 1862 letter

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FEW COVERS IN EXISTENCE WITH THE 40-CENT TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS RATE PAID BY A BLOCK OF STAMPS. AN OUTSTANDING SHOWPIECE AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRANS-MISSISSIPPI COVERS EXTANT.

Paid Jun. 23" (1864) circular datestamps on cover to Miss Sarah L. Wadley, care of her father, Col. William M. Wadley (who was in charge of western railroads) at Shreveport La. and forwarded to Monroe La., neat "Shreveport La. Sep. 7" double-circle datestamp and "DUE 10" straightline handstamp, minor edgewear

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED FORWARDED TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER. A WONDERFUL USE WITH A BEAUTIFUL STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 10-CENT DIE A ENGRAVED ISSUE.

In addition to the unique forwarded use, this is also a scarce East-to-West Trans-Mississippi cover. The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi Express covers are known, making them about three-times scarcer than eastbound covers.

Jan. 3" (1864) circular datestamp on cover to Miss Sara M. Avery in Houston Tex. and addressed "Care of E. H. Cushing", sender's directive "Via Meridian & Shreveport" at bottom and "Care of Hon. D D Avery of La." at right, strip has a hint of a light pre-use crease at top, mention of which only serves to emphasize its outstanding condition, two small age spots in center of cover

EXTREMELY FINE GEM STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 10-CENT ENGRAVED ISSUE ON A WESTBOUND TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER. WESTBOUND COVERS ARE MUCH SCARCER THAN EASTBOUND COVERS.

The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi express covers are known, making them about three-times scarcer than eastbound covers. E. H. Cushing, publisher of the Houston Daily Telegraph, was a well-known express agent. He established private express routes after the fall of New Orleans in April 1862. The labels he affixed to mail carried on Cushing's Express are great rarities. This cover was apparently intended to be carried by Cushing's Express, but was instead handled in the government Trans-Mississippi Express mails.

1439 c Image20c Green (13). Horizontal pair, large margins all around, tied by "Marietta Ga. Jun. 6" (1864) circular datestamp on buff cover to Mrs. D.R. Rakestraw, Fairfield Tex., endorsed at left "G. A. Rakestraw, Co. G, 7 Reg. Texas Vol., Granburys Brig., Cleburnes Division, Army of Tenn." and light pencil "Via Meridian" routing, turned use with other side addressed to G. A. Rakestraw and endorsed by another soldier, pencil note about "Yanks" losing a battle, restored extensively but skillfully (some paper added to flap and edges reseamed)

FINE APPEARANCE. A DESIRABLE EAST-TO-WEST TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER WITH A FIVE-LINE SOLDIER'S ENDORSEMENT, A PAIR OF THE 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE AND "TURNED" FOR RE-USE.

No more than 20 covers with a pair of the 20c Green paying the 40c Trans-Mississippi Express rate are known (see The Trans-Mississippi Mails After the Fall of Vicksburg, Richard Krieger).

Three-line manuscript directive on cover to Bastrop Tex. from the Crocheron correspondence, pair 5c Blue, Local (7), ample margins to just touching, tied by red "Adairsville Geo." circular datestamp, with enclosure, part of a letter datelined "Harrison's Brigade, Wagon Camp, Adairsville Geo., Oct. 31st, 1863" with significant statement about Major Lynch's service: "Today I write another letter home and trust to its getting to Texas through the kindness of Maj. Lynch who has gone to Brandon Miss. ..." and a few lines on other side with good war news, "Bragg will try and retake Knoxville, cross the river and force the enemy to evacuate Chattanooga. Rosencrantz has been superceeded by Gen. Thomas. Gen.
