4001		GREAT BRITAIN, Fores's Courting Envelope No. 1. Attractive design depicting various themes such as Cupid, couples walking and writing letters, etc., red "Paid 28 SP 28 1840" circular datestamp and "Old-St. 1d Paid" handstamp at bottom left, used to Holme Lodge in Ripon, manuscript docketing "London, September twenty eight 1840", minute nick at top right VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FORES'S COURTING ENVELOPE NO. 1. ONLY NINE CONTEMPORANEOUS COVERS ARE KNOWN, WITH THIS THE SECOND EARLIEST KNOWN EXAMPLE. A PICTORIAL ENVELOPE RARITY IN FAR BETTER CONDITION THAN MOST. The British Pictorial Envelopes of the 19th Century book and further research by Dr. Richard Hobbs and Robin Cassell lists seventeen examples. Of those, five are fronts, one has possibly had the adhesive removed, one is not a contemporary use (1898) and no details are known about two others. 4002		GREAT BRITAIN, Fores's Musical Envelope No. 2. Beautiful design depicting opera singer with orchestra and two piano players, red "Paid 30 SP 30 1840" circular datestamp and "City Road 1d Paid" handstamp below, used to Holme Lodge in Ripon, manuscript docketing "London, September thirty 1840", couple stray ink marks at top left VERY FINE AND EXCEPTIONALLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FORES'S MUSICAL ENVELOPE NO. 2, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER 1840. ONLY SIX CONTEMPORANEOUS COVERS ARE KNOWN WITH THIS AS THE EARLIEST RECORDED. A WONDERFUL RARITY. The British Pictorial Envelopes of the 19th Century book plus further research by Dr. Richard Hobbs and Robin Cassell lists thirteen examples. Of those, six are fronts and one is not contemporaneous (used in 1906), making only six contemporaneous covers known. 4003		GREAT BRITAIN, 1840 Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") Hand-Colored Caricature Mulready Broadside Design. Stuck down on heavy card backing, skillfully hand-colored sarcastic rendering of the issued Mulready showing various scenes of the period mimicking a Mulready with a slight "flare", each section of the design done with a sense of humor such as the elephant at top right wearing a top hat, main central figure as an overweight lady with a dog below reading a newspaper and overweight natives at top right holding up a pint, "Published by Chapman & Hall, 186 Strand, 1840" imprint slightly cut-away at bottom, some slight wear along edges from frame removal and minor toning, Very Fine appearance, only twelve have been recorded by Dr. Richard Hobbs and Robin Cassell, about half of which are hand-colored, rumors suggest this piece of art hung on the walls of a prominent auctioneers' wall for many years prior to being purchased at Ameripex in 1986 (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com	E. $ 1,000-1,500 SOLD for $1,900.00 Will close during Public Auction
