2294 c Image12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, large margins to just in, tied by light strike of circular datestamp on small 1858 cover to Brussels, Belgium, red "New-York Am. Pkt. May 8" circular datestamp, manuscript "2" and blue Belgian "4" rates, London (May 22), Ostende (May 23) and receiving (May 23) backstamps, also "58" in circle backstamp, tiny tear at top between stamps, some slight cover toning, Very Fine and unusual use, since the next sailing of the Havre Line was May 29, this was actually sent on the Inman Line's Kangaroo, which departed New York May 8, 1858 and arrived Liverpool May 22, since it was sent via British Packet the payment should only have been 5c paid by sender with 12p due from recipient, based on the markings this was treated as if sent via American Packet so only 4p was due from recipient with 2p going to England, a most unusual use, ex Grunin (Image)
