2268 c Image5c Red Brown (12). A Relief from the top row of the plate, three large margins, just touched at left, tied by "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express Sac. City Dec. 12" double-oval datestamp on legal-size buff cover with Wells, Fargo & Co. black printed frank, additional strike of cancel on frank, to Marysville Cal., pencil "this too heavy, DeKay collect on this" and signed, 1859 date at bottom, intact Wells, Fargo was seal on back, light vertical file fold well away from stamp, some slight edgewear, expertly restored at left where irregularly opened

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED WELLS, FARGO & COMPANY EXPRESS COVERS WITH THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE.

Nov. 16" (1856) circular datestamp on blue folded cover originating in Vera Cruz, Mexico, and sent to Bordeaux, France, neat "Vera Cruz 9 Novbae 1856" backstamp, sender's directive "Via U.S." at top, blue "Forwarded by E.J. Forstal" oval backstamp, red "New York Br. Pkt. Nov. 26" circular datestamp, carried on the Cunarder Europa, which departed New York Nov. 26 and arrived Liverpool Dec. 8, London, Calais and receiving circular datestamps, "13" decimes due handstamp, missing bottom flap

VERY FINE STAMP AND COVER. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE USED ON COVERS ORIGINATING OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES. A GREAT RARITY.

The other recorded use of the 5c on a cover originating outside of the U.S. was sent from Mexico in February 1857 (ex Hubbard and Mayer).
