United States and Confederate States Postal History continued...

3c 1851-56 Issue, cont: Private Perforations
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2264 c Image3c Dull Red, Ty. II, Petersburg Va. Private Rouletted Perforations (11A var). Large margins all around including part of five adjoining stamps, rich color, showing several clear roulette holes at top and other sides, tied by blue "Petersburg Va. 3cts. Aug. 22" integral-rate circular datestamp on cover with grocers and commission merchant's blue cameo corner card to Henderson N.C.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS MAY BE THE ONLY REPORTED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH PRIVATE ROULETTE USED FROM PETERSBURG VIRGINIA.

The Sesquicentennial book contains an article by Wilson Hulme discussing unofficial roulettes, including those made at Newbern N.C., Waterbury Conn., Richmond Va., Philadelphia, New York City and Bergen N.Y. The book does not discuss Petersburg, and this is the first example we have offered since keeping computerized records.

Percival, Fourth & Cherry, Phila." at top left

VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE KENSINGTON/PHILADELPHIA PRIVATE SAWTOOTH PERFORATION, AND ONE OF ONLY TWO USED FROM PHILADELPHIA.

In his Sesquicentennial book article, Wilson Hulme records two covers with the sawtooth perforation used from Philadelphia and two used from Kensington, a suburb of Philadelphia, which may have all originated from the same creator.
