VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING "BALLON MONTE" COVER TO THE UNITED STATES, FLOWN OUT OF UNDER-SIEGE PARIS DURING THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR.

After carriage by manned balloon out of Paris, landing in occupied France east of Paris, carriage to a part of free France and routing around the occupation area, this cover sailed from Queenstown on the Inman Line steamer City of London, prepaid at the 70-centimes post-treaty rate via British mails. The letter contents are from a war correspondent reporting on the Oct. 21 battle at Malmaison.

Bank in Washington D.C., franked with 1870 Siege Issue, 10c Bister and 20c Dull Blue (54, 57; Yvert 36, 37), two each affixed overlapping and tied by red London and New York circular datestamps, Paris double-circle datestamps, red Insufficient Postage two-line handstamp but accepted for 70c rate via British mails, stamps and front with some small flaws, otherwise Fine, the only balloon cover mailed from besieged Paris and prepaid for the direct route, carried out of Paris on the manned balloon General Faidherbe on Jan. 14, which landed near Bordeaux, the Ligne H sailing had just left from St. Nazaire on Jan. 6 and another would not occur until Feb. 3, so instead this was sent via England and not charged for the 10c deficiency, carried from Liverpool by Cunarder China on Jan. 21, illustrated in Chronicle 247 on p. 282 (Image)
