VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE PAIR OF THE 1893 2-CENT DULL VIOLET WITH INVERTED OVERPRINT USED ON COVER.
Only two sheets of this 2c overprint were printed upside down. This is the first multiple we have offered since keeping computerized records.
Ex Atherton. Scott Retail as singles. (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE CATEGORY II DOUBLE RED OVERPRINT ON THE 1893 5-CENT ULTRAMARINE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE.
The Category I double overprint on the 5c Ultramarine does not exist in used condition, so this Category II error is the closest one can come to a used double overprint.
Ex Ishikawa. With 1974 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM PAIR OF THE 5-CENT WITH RED OVERPRINT INVERTED.
Only two sheets of the 5c Ultramarine were overprinted upside down. We have offered only one multiple since keeping computerized records (a block of four).
Ex Atherton. Scott Retail as singles (Image)
THIS IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF THE 1893 6-CENT PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH DOUBLE RED OVERPRINT. A SPECTACULAR RARITY.
Based on the examples observed, at least three 6c sheets were doubly overprinted in red. The Scott Catalogue lists this stamp only with a Category II double overprint, although a single with a strong second overprint is shown at www.hawaiianstamps.com, and the pair offered in our Golden sale (Sale 1009, lot 709) certainly appears to be of Category I strength. The Honolulu Advertiser collection contained a part-imprint horizontal block of 10 with a Category II double overprint, and the block of four in the Pietsch sale probably came from the same sheet as the Advertiser block. The block of 25 offered here is a third source of double overprints, also of Category II strength.
Scott Retail for a single Category II double overprint is $1,100.00, giving this a catalogue value of $27,500.00 as singles (Image)
