Tied by negative "HI" in oval cancel on buff cover to Henry Adams at San Francisco, used with horizontal pair of United States 3c Rose (65), 2c Black (73) and 3c Ultramarine (114), cancelled or tied by grids, "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Feb. 26" circular datestamp, "San Francisco Mar. 16" circular datestamp, 1870 docketing at left, U.S. stamps with few small faults, some edgewear

VERY FINE. A RARE AND COLORFUL MIXED-FRANKING COVER BEARING THE 5-CENT HAWAIIAN STAMP AND STAMPS FROM THE UNITED STATES 1861 AND 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUES.

This cover was carried on either the American Schooner Jane A. Falkenberg or the John Hancock, both of which departed Honolulu on February 26, 1870, and arrived in San Francisco on March 16. The U.S. postage is overpaid by 1c. During the contract steamer period, mail addressed to the U.S. was charged 5c Hawaiian and 10c U.S. postage, regardless of destination. As such, lower rates to San Francisco no longer applied.

Unlisted in the Gregory census of 1869 stamps on covers from Hawaii used before July 1, 1870 -- 13 such uses are recorded (Vol. III, p. 41). Ex Atherton (Image)

Tied by bold strike of three-ring target cancel, used with United States 1873 6c Dull Pink (159), tied by crossroads cancel, black "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Sep. 22" (1875) circular datestamp on back, magenta "San Francisco Cal. Oct. 19" double-circle datestamp on cover to Deptford, England, London receiving backstamp, Hawaiian stamp with inconsequential corner bend described on accompanying certificate as a crease, cover soiling, small back flap tear, still Very Fine, a scarce "6 & 6" mixed-franking cover prepaid for the 6c Hawaiian treaty rate to the U.S. and obsolete 6c U.S. treaty rate to England, the GPU rate of 5c started in July 1875, so the U.S. postage on this cover is overpaid by 1c, with 1970 P.F. certificate (Image)
