EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THIS SAN FRANCISCO LOCAL POST'S "VALENTINE EXPRESS" FRANK.
Frey's Valentine Express and Appleton's Valentine Express used distinctive franked envelopes to promote their local Valentine delivery service in San Francisco. Lyons records only this single example of the Appleton's so there are no reported dated examples. They probably were used briefly in the 1864-65 period.

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE FREY'S SAN FRANCISCO LOCAL VALENTINE COVER.
The New England Valentine Company had an office in Massachusetts and Frey's Valentine Express was their general agent in San Francisco, with an office at 404 Kearny Street. The express covers were advertising envelopes which could contain a Valentine -- in some cases pasted to the back of the envelope. The Frey's envelopes are known in black on orange, red on orange and red on white (the example offered here), with blue "Paid" handstamps. Lyons records only four in total, each unique in either design or color.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USED EXAMPLE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO PRIVATE POST OFFICE LOCAL PRINTED FRANK ON WHITE.
According to research by John Bowman and Gordon Stimmell (see Penny Post Oct. 2005, pp. 24-25 and Chronicle No. 208, p. 271), the Private Post Office changed its name to the Public Letter Office -- or the other way around depending on one's interpretation of the dates and the evidence connecting the two from the back of a corner cut for the Private Post Office in Stimmell's collection. Before it was believed that the two operations were separate and this is the reason for the separate Scott Catalogue listings (123LU and 125LU).
