Blue printed ribbon-style frank with services described and office located at 519 Clay St. on buff cover to local addressee, Sep. 25, 1862 docketing at left, Very Fine, Robinson & Co. was operated by John C. Robinson, who bought out Early's San Francisco Letter Express in 1862 and continued to deliver mail locally for about one year until selling out to Gahagan & Howe, very few used examples of Robinson's printed franks (two styles) are known, Lyons records only one example of each, the other style with 611 Montgomery address is offered in the previous lot, ex Dale-Lichtenstein, with 2011 P.F. certificate (Image)

1556 c ImageRobinson & Co., San Francisco. Full and clear strike of "Robinson & Co. City Delivery" oval handstamp, 3c Rose (65) cancelled by grid in circle with second strike of "San Francisco Cal. Feb. 4, 1863" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to local street address, stamp has small tear at left, cover reduced at left, minor edge wear with small mended tear and soiling, still a Very Fine strike of this rare marking, Robinson & Co. was operated by John C. Bold strike of blue oval handstamp with matching "Paid" oval on buff cover to San Francisco street address, manuscript "Swift's Express", Very Fine, a rare example of this San Francisco local post, the Thomas book (Vol. 2, page 734) states that while it is unclear if Swift's City Express was part of Swift & Co., most believe both services were operated by the same person, approximately three of the Swift's City Express handstamps are recorded, see lot 1718 for another example of Swift's local delivery, with 2009 P.F. certificate (Image)
