1659 c ImagePaid Mead & Clarke. Over Our Clear Creek Route. Printed frank in the style of Wells, Fargo & Co. (Thomas MEC-001) on 3c Pink on White entire (U58), paste-up (buff cover to Hon. B. D. Wilson at Lake Vineyard in Los Angeles County Cal. was on paste-up side but has been removed and does not accompany), conjunctive use with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. San Francisco Jun. 12" oval datestamp on franked entire, opened at right slightly into embossed stamp (extended with part of frame drawn in), some lightened stain spots, still Fine, according to Nathan this small express company ran in 1864-66 between Fort Miller (now Fresno) and Snellings Ranch (near Merced) in the Clear Creek mining region, this southbound express cover was given to Wells, Fargo & Co. in San Francisco, then to Mead & Clarke for delivery to B. D. Wilson, a prominent Californian who acquired land from one of the original Mexican claimants (Wilson named his ranch Lake Vineyard), to emphasize the rarity of this express company's franks, no examples were contained in the 1997 or 2004 Dale-Lichtenstein sales or the Barkhausen collection, the Thomas book lists only two examples (one without information), illustrated in Letters of Gold (Image)

English sold his interest in English & Wells, L. H. Wells became the sole proprietor of this service which operated a stage and express between the middle and south fork of the Yuba River, connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co. at Nevada City (Thomas, p. 536), this ornately framed frank remained the same through several name changes from English & Wells thru Wells & Herring's, only approximately eight entires are known of this frank with the L.H. H. Wells took on Absalom W. Herring as a partner in March 1870 and operated as Wells & Co. and then Wells & Herring's, running the same route as its predecessor company, in 1872 advertisements for this express stopped appearing and were replaced with ads for Wells & Trotter (no franks known, Thomas p. 539), this ornately framed frank remained the same through several name changes from English & Wells thru Wells & Herring's, this is one of the rarest versions with only six used entires recorded in Thomas, with 2011 P.F. certificate (Image)

1666 c ImageNewell & Co's Express San Francisco. Blue double oval handstamp (Thomas NEW-100) at lower left on buff cover with red "Adams & Co. Express San Francisco California" shield corner card, addressed to Mokelumne Hill Cal., manuscript "Free" by Adams who handed off to Newell for delivery at Mokelumne Hill, central filing crease and tiny edge tears, appears Very Fine, a rare conjunctive cover, in Oct. 1851 L. W. Newell and E. W. Colt, partners of Todd & Co. bought out their other partners and changed the name to Newell & Co., they had a strong affiliation with Adams & Co. and connected with them in San Francisco, they ran two routes from San Francisco, one through Stockton to Sonora to the southern mines and the other via ocean steamers to Oregon Territory (see cover in following lot), they either sold the operation to Adams in 1853 or closed when Adams failed, there are only four recorded examples of this handstamp (Thomas book p. 549) (Image)
