Dark red and black frank with wonderful illustration of six-horse stagecoach (Thomas ORO-002) on 3c Green entire (U163), conjunctive use but without Wells, Fargo & Co. markings, addressed to San Francisco, sender's violet backstamp "A.D. McIntyre & Co., Greenville, Plumas Co., Cal.", scattered tiny toned spots, still Very Fine and rare, carried by the Oroville & Quincy Express from Greenville in Plumas County south to Oroville, then by Wells, Fargo & Co. to San Francisco, research by Lyons pinpoints the operations of this express to only May 25 thru July 11, 1874, only five examples of this frank are recorded in Thomas (plus seven in the lighter red) (Image)

Printed frank with illustration of 6-horse stagecoach and list of towns served (Thomas PAS-002) on 3c Pink on White entire (U34) to San Francisco, "Nevada City Cal. Oct. 7" circular datestamp and rosette cancel, few creases, otherwise Very Fine, this express ran from Sacramento to Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Illinoistown and Dutch Flat, it extended into Nevada by way of Truckee Meadows and Virginia City, only approximately six used examples of this frank are recorded in both styles in Thomas (the other style without towns listed at top), most posted at Nevada City, the 2004 Dale-Lichtenstein sale had two nearly identical covers (both U35) from the same correspondence with Oct. 2 and 10 Nevada City datestamps, we suspect that all three were used after the express closed in 1864 (Image)
