42 E Image1861 Issue Essays, Toppan, Carpenter & Co. (63-E9a/72-E4b). Eight essays representing each of the 1861 Toppan, Carpenter & Co. complete design submissions, incl. Nos. 63-E9a, 65-E4c, 67-E4b (in Black and Brown), 69-E4c, 70-E4b (two) and 72-E5a, each cut to shape as always but showing full designs all around, rich colors, a few small imperfections

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE SET OF THE 1861 TOPPAN, CARPENTER & CO. FULL DESIGN ESSAYS.

The wide availability of the 1903 reprints produced by Ernest Schernikow sometimes lures collectors into the sense that these 1861 original Toppan, Carpenter essays are common. A footnote in Scott states "examples on 1861 paper and in 1861 colors are rare." This set represents the full group of complete designs submitted for the 1861 contract (Toppan, Carpenter did not produce a 10c or 30c design for the contract) (Image)
