1459 c Image3c Rose (65). Rough separation with small piece out of bottom, cancelled by clear strike of Oil Barrel fancy cancel, "Tidioute Pa. Sep. 19" circular datestamp on orange-buff cover to Nantucket Mass., with 1867 letter enclosure, Very Fine cover, four days after Col. Drake drilled the first well, a second was drilled at Tidioute but it was a dry hole, drilling continued and the hill across the river became filled with derricks, the Oil Barrel and other Tidioute fancy cancels are attributed to Stephen H. Evans, who was postmaster from 1863 to 1871 except for brief service in the Union army -- ex Knapp and Boker (Image)
