Fancy Cancellations Featuring the Dr. Robertson Collection
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1448 c Image3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Large to huge margins incl. sheet margin at top, tied by sharp mostly complete strike of Odd Fellows Three Links, Seeing Eye and Crossed Arrows fancy cancel, matching "Canton Mi. Jan. 9" circular datestamp on 1855 folded letter to Buchannon Carroll & Co. in New Orleans, light horizontal file fold

VERY FINE. A CLEAR STRIKE OF THE CANTON MASONIC FANCY CANCEL ON AN ATTRACTIVE COVER WITH A SHEET-MARGIN COPY OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

Canton's postmaster is well known for his fancy cancellations, including a Lyre, Star in Rope Circle, Negative Star, Negative "Paid 3", Christian Cross and an unusual Open Triangle, as well as the star used as a Confederate postmaster's provisional. This is the most elaborate of the Canton designs. (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE WAVING FLAG FANCY CANCEL ON A WAVING FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER. BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY SUCH COMBINATION OF CANCEL AND STATIONERY WITH PRO-UNION FLAG MOTIFS.

Undoubtedly the postmaster took great pride in applying his hand-carved Flag fancy cancel on this red, white and blue Flag patriotic envelope, which mirrors his design. We first encountered this cover 25 years ago and have never seen another like it.
