Post-1851 Rates
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1204 c ImageSunapee N.H. to Compton, Canada, April-May 1851. Three folded letters demonstrate the transition to the April 6, 1851 U.S.-B.N.A. agreement and new combination 10c (6d) rate, each from Sunapee N.H., exchanged through Derby Vt. and Stanstead, first showing U.S. paid 5 and Canadian due 9d on April 1 just before the agreement went into effect, second showing new combined rate but expressed as paid 5 and due 3d -- which should not have been accepted as partial rates were not permitted, last with red handstamp "10" with "U. States" arced handstamp containing five-point star, Very Fine trio, the "U. States" with star handstamp is extremely rare and is the only example we have encountered -- Dr. Robertson believes it to be unique (Image)
