1197 c ImageFort Wrangel, Alaska Territory, 1877. Legal-size cover addressed to Mrs. Chas. F. Humphrey in Washington D.C. -- based on the correspondence, this probably originated at Fort Wrangel in Alaska Territory, where Lt. Charles F. Humphrey was stationed (he returned to the U.S. around the time of mailing) -- pairs of United States 3c Green (158) and Canada 1870 3c Copper Red (37b), faults, tied by 5-bar grid cancels, "Victoria B.C. JU 8 77" rimless circular datestamp, magenta "San Francisco Paid All Jun. 14" circular datestamp, Washington D.C. "Carrier Jun. 22 2PM" backstamp, vertical file fold clear of stamps, minor toning, otherwise Fine, rare combination of United States and Canadian stamps on mail originating in Alaska, with 1977 P.F. certificate (Image)

1198 c Image"April 14th 1890 from Arctic Ocean". Pencil docketing on back of cover to Mrs. John N. Mills, New Bedford Mass., originally stamped with two United States 2c Green (213), tied by target cancels, "E. & N. Rwy. B.C. May 10 90" Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Post Office circular datestamp, "Dead Letter Office Canada MY 19 1890" backstamp, "6" due handstamp, after receipt of 6c for Canadian postage, two Canada 1888 3c Bright Vermilion (41) were affixed and tied by same Dead Letter Office datestamp (date unreadable), both Canadian stamps have creases and small faults, one has been lifted and moved to show R.P.O. datestamp, cover toned along edges and slightly worn, otherwise Fine, as explained by Dr. Robertson the sender (probably a whaler) affixed U.S. stamps expecting it would be placed into the mails in Alaska, instead it was posted in British Columbia and carried on the Equimalt & Nanaimo Railway, on arrival at Ottawa it was treated as unpaid and put into the Dead Letter Office, once Canadian postage was paid it was released and sent to New Bedford (Image)

III (267) and Canada 1888 3c Bright Vermilion (41), slight creasing, 3c rounded corner, on cover to Montreal, Canada, Yukon Provisional District Coat of Arms on backflap, "Victoria B.C. AP 13 98" and "Montreal Apl 19 23-0 1898" backstamps, small mended opening nick at top, otherwise Fine, extremely rare combination of United States and Canadian stamps on cover from Tagish Lake in the North West Territory, in the spring of 1898 the Northwest Mounted Police was in charge of the post office and mails, this cover was sent south through Dyea and Skagway, the sender used both countries' postage stamps to ensure it was treated as prepaid by both postal systems, ex Dr. Metejka (Image)
