New York Postmasters Provisionals
Lot Sym. Lot Description
868   ImageNew York Post Office, Aug. 18, 1846. Pre-printed New York Post Office letterhead with a request for assistance related to $15, written by an elderly man from Trenton N.J. who was apparently a Revolutionary War veteran, stating in part "please to attend to an old '76 request...David Whitehead, y 85...m2...d2", the latter a clear reference to his current age of 85 years plus, he would have been between 14 and 21 years of age during the war, a fascinating collateral item for the New York or Revolutionary War collector and warranting further research, there could not have been many veterans left in 1846, docketing on back indicates the New York Post Office answered Mr. Whitehead's letter the next day (Image)
